A group of Jamestown residents is getting ready to travel next week more than 2,400 miles to the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere.
James Valley Youth for Christ is headed on a mission trip to Haiti on July 8. Once there, 11 students and seven staff members will be tasked with helping the people of Haiti after a January 2010 earthquake affected the lives of an estimated 3 million people.

Seven months after the Jan. 12 earthquake that devastated Haiti, two community members who recently returned from there say life remains grim and precarious, especially for the 400,000 children left without parents.
Cara Prescott and Troy Gunderson joined seven others from this Youth For Christ region in a weeklong mission trip to Haiti Aug. 21-28. Gunderson is executive director of the local YFC and Prescott is a board member.
“It was designed for us to see the place and set up a student mission trip to Haiti,” Gunderson said. “Missions have been on my heart for a long time.”
