PIERRE (AP) A man who helped defeat two previous attempts by Hughes County commissioners to raise the county wheel tax has collected enough petition signatures to put the fate of another increase in the hands of voters.

As of Jan. 1, Gregory County residents are being assessed a $2 per wheel tax for road maintenance and repair.
After county voters rejected a $4-per-wheel maximum tax on Nov. 2, county commissioners moved quickly on a resolution to enact the lower tax, County Auditor Jim Waterbury said.
Commission Chairman Dennis Vedral, of rural Gregory, said commissioners decided the county needed to adopt the $8 tax per vehicle. Continue Reading

HOWARD In a time when many counties and townships are trying to or have enacted a wheel tax, Miner County contemplated ending its 16-yearold wheel tax Tuesday.
After roughly 45 minutes of discussion, County Commission Chairman Rollin “Rollie” Schulz, of Canova, broke a 2-2 vote to oppose repealing the wheel tax. That means the county will continue imposing the $4 per wheel tax, which is the maximum allowed by the state. Continue Reading

BURKE Residents of Gregory County have been added to the growing list of South Dakota residents considering additional funding for ailing county roads.
The county’s new wheel tax of up to $4 a wheel will be on the Nov. 2 general election ballot after petitions were submitted recently to force the matter to a public vote. County commissioners approved the tax this summer. Continue Reading
