HISSES to the announcement that this region essentially “went backward 20 years in population,” which was made last week by an official from Planning and Development District III. Greg Henderson, executive director of that organization, said that during a meeting at the Douglas County Courthouse in Armour and based it on 2010 census data. Continue Reading

CHEERS to the Cornbelt Conference and the three teams that came from it this year to win state high school football championships. Canistota defeated Hitchcock-Tulare 66-0 to win the Class 9B title, Hanson beat Harding County 34-16 to win the Class 9A title and Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan beat Viborg-Hurley 48-34 to win the Class 9AA title. It seems that every year, the bulk of this state’s football championships go to schools and co-ops from the Mitchell region. We’re not surprised by this tradition, since we see firsthand the dedication of players, coaches and fans at games throughout the season, and throughout the years. Congratulations to teams and fans from Canistota, Bridgewater, Emery, Ethan, Alexandria, Fulton, Farmer and everybody in between. It was a great year, capped by an almost unbelievable showing by the Cornbelt Conference at the DakotaDome. Continue Reading

CHEERS to two city leaders who took differing sides last week at a debate about an issue that faces Mitchell voters. Mayor Lou Sebert and City Council member Mel Olson spoke for more than a half hour about the pros and cons of allowing Sunday offsale of liquor in Mitchell, an issue voters will decide Tuesday. Olson spoke against allowing Sunday offsale, and Sebert spoke in favor. We appreciate that they are willing to take a stand on the issue, which is what true leaders do. We also appreciate that when the debate ended, they slapped each other on the back, smiled and cordially visited before leaving the amphitheater at Mitchell Technical Institute. That’s precisely what election season should be about disagreement on issues, but a maintenance of decorum. Continue Reading

CHEERS to a letter from Mary Mortenson, of Mitchell, that was published in Saturday’s Daily Repubilc. Mortenson, responding to piece penned by the Rev. Kristi McLaughlin that dealt with abortion, wrote that “it was refreshing to read the words of this woman who articulated her position without demonizing those with whom she disagrees.” In her letter, Mortenson doesn’t agree or disagree with McLaughlin’s piece, but simply appreciated McLaughlin for her tone and for calmly voicing her opinion. CHEERS to the group Unfiltered REALity, which is comprised of Mitchell High School students and which works to keep fellow students from smoking. The organization marched during the Dakota Wesleyan University Blue and White Days parade earlier this month and got us thinking that it takes guts to make such a stand as a teenager. CHEERS to Mitchell Regional Habitat for Humanity, which held its first “Brush With Kindness” event earlier this month. On a Saturday, 26 volunteers showed up, ready to paint the home and clean up the yard of a Mitchell woman. The event was made possible with gifts from the Mitchell Charitable Foundation, South Dakota Habitat for Humanity and donations to the local chapter. Even better news: The organization wants to do it again next year, perhaps painting as many as two or three homes in the Mitchell area. We commend the Mitchell Regional Habitat for Humanity for its efforts and hope the group continues to be able to find volunteers to aid with these worthwhile projects. Continue Reading
