RED LAKE INDIAN RESERVATION, Minn. They came as strangers, young people from the Navajo Nation in Arizona who had never seen anything quite like the massive body of water the Aniishiinabe call Miskwagami-wizaga-igoniyg for its beautiful sunsets.
The Millerville Sportsmen Club, with a permit from the Department of Natural Resources Fisheries and the help of the Viking Sportsmen Club, stocked 3,700 walleye fingerlings into Lake Moses and 3,700 walleye fingerlings into Lake Aaron.
Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton didn’t catch a walleye for the second straight year during the season opener. Dayton, who has never hidden his lack of angling prowess, nonetheless noted the warm, sunny weather and said he had “a great morning.”
The opening day of Minnesota’s walleye season isn’t a state holiday, but in the minds of many people, the annual opener is one of the biggest events of the year. Even North Dakota anglers, who live in a state where fishing season is open year-round, make the eastward trek to participate in this great Minnesota tradition. Minnesota sells more than 1 million fishing licenses annually, and a high percentage of them will be on the water for Saturday’s fishing opener.
Pick a lake or river in Minnesota, and this year probably set a record for early ice-out. That had fishing prognosticators thinking walleye opener 2012 would be more like early June, which often serves up some of the easiest, if not the best fishing of the year.
