NDSU students design winter survival app for smartphones

A computer engineering student from Virginia has helped design a smartphone application for winter travelers. The free app designed by 20-year-old Adam Koski and a fellow student at North Dakota State University helps motorists who are stranded in severe winter weather. It determines geographical location, calculates how long the vehicle’s engine will run on remaining fuel and provides emergency contact numbers, among other things. Continue Reading

Taconite mining plants on Minnesota’s Iron Range operated at close to capacity in 2011

Minnesota’s taconite mining operations ran at or close to capacity in 2011. The Mesabi Daily News reports that the Iron Range produced an estimated 38.9 million tons of iron pellets last year. That’s 3.8 million tons more than in 2010, and much better than the 17.1 million in the downturn year of 2009.
