There was news of this magnitude late on a Friday afternoon in 1961 Nov. 7, 1961. Gerry Niemeyer and his wife, Iva, were both dead, killed in a car collision at a rural intersection near Fairmont, which was Niemeyer’s boyhood home. The work week was ended, the weekend had begun.
