On Saturday I attended a talk on climate change and its effect on forests. What I expected to take away from this presentation was hard facts and solid data to let me make some real conclusions based on sound scientific reasoning. I left the talk very disappointed.
On Jan. 12, the Friends of the Hudson Library, in conjunction with the annual Hudson Hot Air Affair, hosted Barry Wallace, swan enthusiast, who spoke on the reintroduction of the trumpeter swan.
In early January, the St. Croix Valley Bird Club sponsored an exceptional talk on Loons at the Hudson Library. Sam Lewis, from “LoonWatch,” spoke on his “72 Years of Listening to Loons.”
It was back in February of 2005 when the first Outdoor Happenings column appeared. Jeff Holmquist, who was and still is editor of the New Richmond News, Chet McCarty, who was the manager of the St. Croix Wetlands Management District (SCWMD) at that time, and I met to formulate an outdoor column for the paper.
Over the next few months, when time permits, several of our local conservation clubs and organizations will be profiled to provide historical background plus highlight the opportunities these organizations offer to area residents.
This year’s Spring Hearings will have a slightly different spin to it. It is scheduled for April 9 starting at 7 p.m. in all 72 of Wisconsin’s counties but the Department of Natural Resources portion will be informational only with no real rule changes being presented to be voted on.
