BEACH The faint sound of a siren coming from a Golden Valley Sheriff’s Department car began to echo in front of Beach High School on Wednesday and it didn’t stop there. A parade of emergency services flooded the school parking lot for a mock car crash that left area sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders with something to think about as they make choices to get behind the wheel or get into a vehicle with a driver who has been drinking. Learning to drive, and going to prom and graduation are rites of passage for many teenagers. They can be the stuff of great high school memories, but every year around this time, the combination of motor vehicles, youthful exuberance and flawed judgment take a tragic toll on young livesclaiming some, injuring others.
It’s a situation that every parent fears. A deadly accident as a result of drunk driving. In Menahga, that same scene was played out for students Wednesday as a warning before prom this weekend. Rescue workers took their jobs seriously and methodically worked the accident scene to save a critically injured student and make sure others were taken care of. First Responders, Wadena County deputies, Menahga police, North Memorial Ambulance personnel and Menahga firefighters participated in the mock accident.
