MINNEWAUKAN, ND (WDAZ-TV) – The city of Minnewaukan has some new leverage in the flood fight against Devils Lake. FEMA awarded the city nearly $5 million to relocate some homes and demolish others.

School, water tower and property are at riskPeople in this Benson County, N.D., seat of 290 have been battling the lake for the past 15 years, relocating its lagoons and rebuilding its sewer system, among other emergency repairs. Construction of a 3,000-foot-long temporary clay dike could start by Friday. The hope is that the berm will buy the school and the community time to relocate to higher ground.
Minnewaukan seeks higher ground
This community, which was eight miles from Devils Lake 20 years ago, is likely to become a peninsula this summer, with water on three sides threatening its water and sewer systems, as well as the school.
