SIOUX FALLS (AP) — In a stirring tribute Thursday to former Sen. George McGovern, Vice President Joe Biden hailed the one-time presidential nominee as the “father of the modern Democratic Party” for his forceful stand against the Vietnam War and for helping open the party to more women, young people and minorities.

The White House confirmed Wednesday that Biden would take part in a Thursday prayer service at the First United Methodist Church in Sioux Falls. The two served together in the Senate during the 1970s and early 1980s.
