For the last five years, Dickinson resident Eric Smallwood enjoyed looking out of his apartment window at the trees across the street by the Dickinson Elks Building. But a Tacoma, Wash., developer cut down the trees and made way for new ones Friday.
Dickinson may take a different route to provide up to $82,500 in remaining funds to restore the historic Elks Building, commissioners said at a meeting at City Hall Monday.

Historic Elks Building owner Granville Brinkman said last Friday on-hold renovations would begin again today and the project will be complete by a city-imposed June 30 deadline. However, as of Thursday he had not paid for a permit that would allow work to continue and, according to court records, he is allegedly indebted hundreds of thousands of dollars to contractors, some who have pulled off the job.
