Upon arriving for work Monday, I braced myself. The reason was that Saturday’s Herald included my story about a Grafton, N.D., man who has been on 11 big game hunts in Africa. Since trophy hunting can be an emotional issue, I anticipated calls, mail and emails from critics and defenders. As expected, hordes of readers filled my various inboxes. RYAN BAKKEN: Finley woman wins third tater tot hotdish crown in five years

Lisa Jacobson’s tater tot legend grew larger here Saturday. For the third time in its five years, the Luverne, N.D., woman won the highly coveted tater tot hotdish crown at The Press Box tavern’s annual contest. She knows her tater tots, proven by winning with three different recipes. Saturday’s winner was named “Hangover Breakfast.” I neglected to ask if her recipe was chosen at random or was a strategic move because the three contest judges were two members of the media and one elected official, professions with imbibing stereotypes. Weekly newspaper the Hillsboro Banner gets new owner and old editor back

Long-time editor Neil O. Nelson is back in the saddle at the Hillsboro (N.D.) Banner after a change of ownership. He was editor at the Banner for a dozen years until being let go in April. Kelly Ink in Lisbon, which owns several other papers in the state, owned the Banner for nine years and recently sold to a partnership called Sub-Zero Press of Hillsboro, which brought Nelson back. Finley sales tax vote set for Jan. 17

A vote on whether to double the city sales tax in Finley, N.D., has been rescheduled for Jan. 17. City officials were unable to find enough election workers and had to postpone the election. The ballot asks to increase the local sales tax to 2 percent. Continue Reading
