Kristiina Thums earns superior rating in music competition

When the Lake County News-Chronicle called to speak to Kristiina Thums about a recent achievement, she was at track practice. With several inches of snow still on the ground, it’s hard to imagine that the Minnesota vegetable planting season will soon be here.
The road winds inland for eight miles through trees and fields to Chelsea Morning Farm. Just beyond a graying weathered fence is a half-round plastic covered greenhouse the first indication of the farm.
The Friends of the Finland Community presented a $100,000 check to Crystal Bay Township at its annual meeting in March. It’s the culmination of the group’s fundraising efforts over the course of six years and it will go directly towards the debt remaining from the construction of the Clair Nelson Center in Finland.
Last year, the organizers of the Harvest Booya and Finnfest had to make a tough decision. The ranks of volunteers were thinning and younger ones were not stepping in to fill the roster, so in 2012, for the first time since 1985, the booya was cancelled. Unwilling to give up on the beloved fall festival, Stacy Breden and Julie Arnold went to work–now they are hoping to Save the Booya.
The origins of St. Urho’s Day will forever be disputed. Some claim Sulo Havumaki of Bemidji began the legend of St. Urho, and others credit Richard Mattson of Virginia. In the pages of the News-Chronicle in 2011, Karl Aho argued that Herman, a Mesabi Daily News employee, started the St. Urho fable.
