The Minnesota Tibetan community is estimated at around 2,500 to 3,000, mostly in the Twin Cities area. That’s second in the U.S. only to the greater New York area. When the Dalai Lama announced earlier this year that he would give up his political role, while remaining a spiritual leader, he said it was time for elected leadership to emerge in the Tibetan community. The Dalai Lama’s nephew was smiling, radiating energy as he tackled the first leg of a 300-mile walk to promote Tibet’s independence from China. He insisted on finishing the last two miles on his own, even as darkness fell.
