MADISON, Wis. (AP) Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker established a program that has given hundreds of thousands of dollars in merit raises and bonuses to some state workers even as he preached cost-cutting and pushed through a law reducing most public workers’ pay and eliminating their union rights.
PIERRE A bill that would give bonuses to top-performing South Dakota teachers was approved Thursday by a Senate committee, despite criticism from opponents who argue that the extra money should instead be put toward school districts’ general operating budgets.
Gov. Dennis Daugaard’s plan to boost teacher pay to the most-wanted and top-performing teachers appears to be gaining traction in the state Legislature, but with an unfortunate twist.
