In 1978, Kansas sang “all we are is dust in the wind.” For residents of southwestern North Dakota in 2013 caught in a dust storm on a windy day, that lyric can certainly ring true.
Grand Forks and North Dakota both saw record numbers of airline passenger boardings last year. Boardings at the Grand Forks airport were 15 percent higher in 2012 compared to 2011, according to the North Dakota Aeronautics Commission.
For residents of the Grand Forks, of course, the key to United’s continuing to operate out of GFK is the phrase, “Use it or lose it.” Every day brings news of airlines starting or stopping service at airports around the country.
Small western North Dakota airfields that were built decades ago increasingly are being used by business jets and cargo planes in support of the booming oil industry.
