Let’s see, picking up the Duluth School District kids would cost the district $36/day (12 total hours). That is around $756/month and roughly $6,800 per year. For a school district suffering from the severe financial challenges it has seen over the years, I don’t think that is appropriate. Nor is it appropriate for the parents to have even requested such a subsidy from the district. I would say if the parents are willing to pay the costs, then fine. The parents themselves would be saving around $24/day in average operating costs for two private vehicles if they didn’t have to drop off the kids at the district border themselves. This doesn’t include the parents’ personal time savings, which has to be more than the $1/hour it adds to come up to the school cost of $36/day. The parents paying the full $36/day to the district would still be a bargain for them.
