In this time of unprecendented surplus in ND, it is appropriate for the state to do whtever they can to hlep reduce property taxes. School districts are typically the biggest benefactor of our local property tax dollars. During the last legislative session, the state did what they thought would be enough to help reduce property taxes by picking up a larger portion of K-12 funding. It allowed school districts to lower their mills. In light of the new letter we received, it appears that they may go back up again, virtually eliminating any property tax relief we may have seen. Coupled with the increase in assessments, we will see at best a neutral tax, but no savings.
I do have an issue with that, if it holds true. The reason ND has the massive surplus is because fo the economic engine western ND has going right now. It seems unfair that we have to deal with the issues it creates with our daily lives and the remainder of the state will benefit from the states work this year in the are of property taxes, but not us folks in western ND.
All this, when our school district is carrying a $7 million surplus (I believe that number was published) and paying cash for a brand new elementary school.
