OK, first, lets start with some “sidewalk” talk. You say you’re against consumption of alcohol on public sidewalks yet refer to the “crime” in quotation marks if it’s on the “public” sidewalk in front of my home which just a short while ago was my lawn and had no say in the implementation of said sidewalk onto my property and I had to pay for!! Of course, this is all done in the name of “safety”but the fact is people STILL walk in the street rather than on the sidewalk but if by chance they did use it I am still liable if for some reason some harm should come to them. The “public” sidewalk is now my problem where if I still had my lawn…..I wouldn’t have had a problem. Really?!!
If I have a glass of wine on the sidewalk in front of my house it’s a “crime” yet if I take 1 step off onto my lawn, all’s right in the world. Really?!!
All the other “we could” points are excellent points (except maybe the Kernel idea)….so do them. They have nothing to do with this issue.
There is no “slippery slope”.
The tax-free internet is hurting downtown/all business!! Really? If on line sales are taxed do you really think people will shop more locally? That genie is out of the bottle….really. It’s more of a pink elephant in an empty room.
Will the public consumption of wine revitalize downtown? In my opinion no and I don’t agree with the vision of MMS&B so we agree on that but if we both correct that there will be no difference…..what’s the harm?

Just to clarify, it was never presented that allowing a glass of wine on the sidewalk would be the key to revitalization of downtown. MMS&B said, “it is one part and a step in the right direction.”. I said, “it has an economic benefit.” The idea that MMS&B is hanging their hat on the notion that sidewalk cafe causes a vibrant downtown is a misguided statement that was never said.

On the face it seems that Mr. Olsen has some good ideas. I say use all of them including the wine on sidewalks. Considering that ‘ole’ mainstreet is battling the repercussions of malls and large all purpose stores I’d say use all that you have in your armory. The laws on public intoxication etc will still be in effect. We need to use common sense.
