“If rural Democratic lawmakers vote in favor of the bill, Adkins said, they will go against their districts’ views on the issue and face of the possibility of losing the next election.” Well its a good thing that some view civil rights for all people more important than holding elected office.

The irony here is that Republicans are feeling very smug. However, they might find that, by voting against gay marriage, they could incur the wrath of THEIR own constituents, endangering their own re-election bids. There is not one single district in MN that is 100% for or against this issue and they might just find themselves on the wrong side of history.
NO politician should be voting on any issue based on re-election prospects. That’s expecting alot, but that’s how it should be. Do what’s right… move on. For any outside influences, like the Minnesota Catholic Conference and others, to be threatening legislators is unconscionable. Threats are certainly not very Christian!

When the amendment was on the ballot last year, the marching cry for the opponents to those neutral on the amendment or leaning slightly towards supporting it, was, nothing will change, gay marriage still won’t be legal. I know I heard lots of people who bought that argument and decided against supporting the amendment, trusting legislators not to go to the extremes.
Wonder how foolisgh those who bought that lie feel now? This is as dumb politically for the Democrats as it was for Republicans to put the amendment on the ballot. Why can’t these politicians deal with real issues instead of all this marginal fringe extremist garbage!?!?!?! Dolts…

Civil rights and equality ARE real issues, affecting thousands of people… perhaps even someone you know.

I think it’s very likely that the marriage amendment would have passed except that if people left it blank it counted as a “no” vote. They should have counted yes or no votes and ballets left blank on the issue shouldn’t have counted at all for that issue.

“They should have counted yes or no votes and ballets left blank on the issue shouldn’t have counted at all for that issue.”….and just ignore the state constitution amendment laws….
