Wow…to bad the gutless wonder doesn’t just raise the gas tax by five cents per gallon. It makes a lot more sense than borrowing a billion dollars. If you don’t have the money to pay for it you can’t afford it.

There are reasons NOT to raise any tax, gas included.
If state tax pushes the price/gal over what someone would pay in MN, he/she will start buying gas there during their commute which creates kind of a wash…less total gallons sold in WI, but more tax dollars/gal in WI. Interstate border residents have more options than others in the state.
At which point does even a 5 cent tax increase hurt people? People with good/decent incomes and high MPG vehicles probably would hardly notice. But talk with someone with a 25 mpg car and 3 part-time jobs and the impact could be significant. Remember, high MPG vehicles are causing gas tax (transportation funding) to decrease.
There are rumors that in the near future vehicles will be equipped with technology that will log miles driven. Each owner will then receive a bill from the local/state/feds for road use. I hate government intrusion, but that is actually, imo, the most fair way to pay road tax.
This is actually a good time to borrow money because interest rates are incredibly low.
