Dickinson High School students may be able to take advantage of tablet technology in their social studies classes next year, if a $113,000 proposal to purchase 150 Microsoft Surface table computers and needed accessories is approved. Continue Reading

This is absolutely the dumbest idea. I have been in the computer field since the 1980′s.
I have been a classroom Social Studies teacher since 1975. There is NO study that has been done over all these years to show that adding computers increases academic achievement.
If it were true we would have seen all achievement tests rise.
Check your local schools test scores over the past 10,20,30 years.
Are ACT scores up? Check with the DPI are state scores up?

I’m not against technology for students, but statements like this one from “educators” make me absolutely nuts:
“It also got work done, as students do not do homework, he said.
“Even though they have Internet access at home, they don’t do homework,” Ham said. “Most of the time it’s like pulling teeth, but if you have it engaged in the classroom where they can do it there, you’re going to get some results.”
Hmmmm.
So in order for the kids to get their “homework” done, tablets need to be provided so they can get their “homework” done in school. But that raises what should be an obvious question: If they’re doing their “homework” in school, then what is getting elbowed out of the way in order to free up the time to DO “homework” during school hours? Rather than teaching a given class for 45 minutes and then assigning homework, is the “teaching” part going to be whittled down to 25 minutes so the other 20 minutes can be allotted for getting the homework done during class?
Kids NEED to get their homework done. Parents NEED to be involved in the process and see that it gets done. If the homework ISN’T getting done, the the student gets an “F” or a big fat “0″ for that assignment. The “F” or “0″ goes on a transcript and STAYS THERE. It can’t be made up for, or changed, or deleted with some silly “extra credit” nonsense.
Let’s give that a whirl and see how it works. If memory serves, it worked just dandy when I was in school….

Are we “disliking” the concept of interpreting the word HOMEwork literally, or are we “disliking” giving kids appropriate grades for not turning in work. or are we “disliking”holding kids and parents responsible, or…what?
“Liking” someone’s comments is pretty self-explanatory. “Disliking” makes folks wonder. What exactly are you disliking….and why?
