I was rear ended by a 3rd time drunk driver in the middle of the afternoon on Pilot Knob at 42.. This driver had no liscense, was texting at the time, had an open bottle of Vodka in her purse and had to be transported to Detox.
When sentencing time came around she recieved a 6 day sentence in county jail, $600 Fine and had to attend AA and treatment. Her lawyer described the accident to the judge as a fender bender.
It was after I gave my impact statement to the judge that he realized this woman had totaled two cars, damaged a third one and caused me personnel injuries.
Unless they are felonies and prosecuted by the county attorney our city’s law firm will handle the prosecution and she will recieve a similar punishmment.
I think these soft punishments defeat the efforts of our police departments efforts to enforce the drunk driving laws on the books.

I agree Ed. Not too long ago I read of a case where a guy was drunk, had drugs in his possession, and fled the cops at speeds that topped 100 mph. His sentence for his crime…only 6 months in jail. The cops risked their lives to catch this guy. It’s wrong that he got off so easy.
