Sequester could be felt locally

USDA meat inspectors possible targets of cutsWORTHINGTON With Congress facing yet another looming deadline this time to avoid sequester and billions of dollars in budget cuts the potential impacts to the public are wide-ranging and far-reaching. Sequestration, if not avoided by tonight’s midnight deadline, would cut approximately $85 billion from the annual federal budget of $3.6 trillion.

This is the biggest load of BS out of Washington in forever. A 2% cut to a budget that goes a trillion dollars in debt every year and the world is about to end if you believe Obama. Oh and its not even a cut, its a cut to the increase they expect.
These politicians need to get a grasp. Our federal government spending has exploded in the last decade and needs to be cut far more than this. How long do these politicians think we can keep surviving without a budget? Keep borrowing a trillion dollars a year? We are all but bankrupt and we can’t cut even the amount we increase our spending?

Couldn’t agree more. There are thousands of wasteful programs that can be cut and no one would even notice. Lawdog is correct, it ISN’T a cut, simply a cut of the increase for the year. No one needs to be layed off, the sky is not falling, the world is not coming to an end. Everyone needs to remember that if there are cuts, it’s the president that will be directing where those cuts will take place, so if education is cut, etc. it’s HIM that bears the responsibility. It’s funny that everytime we see a problem surface, we hear the president tell us that the cuts will come from the soldiers, medicare or social security instead of from HIS and congresses pay!!??

A slow motion train wreck would be a perfect example of smoke and mirrors. There really is no such thing.

Click Red, for purposes of discussion, let’s assume you are correct and that this impending train wreck is entirely the fault of the House Republican. According to the Administration, the indiscriminate aspects of sequestration will have disastrous results for millions of Americans. The House has offered to let the Administration have full control over the cuts. The Administration’s response was to refuse the offer, stating that it won’t be forced to make the decision between bad and worse; a decision which clearly states that the Administration would rather have the impending train wreck occur without any attempt to slow the train down or implement other evasive actions. President Obama was elected to lead and was empowered to make decisions for the American people. True leaders do not avoid decision making simply because the choice is between bad and worse. True leaders are in fact those who step up and lead even when the choices are limited to bad and worse. It is time for the Administration to lead as promised, not to continue to follow the path of blame. Its easy to lead when the choices are easy and it’s easy to blame when the choices are difficult. As I noted in another post in these blogs, I admire leaders who embrace the philosophy of “the buck stops here” regardless of why a problem exists. I do not admire people who choose the path of blame.

Obama OWNS the sequester. HIS idea, HIS signature on the plan! No matter how much his White House goons attack Mr. Woodward for telling the truth, the truth will still remain, It’s Obama’s!!! The only insanity involved is on behalf of those that think their emperor does no wrong and continually attempts to run cover for him. Time to wake up; The Ivory Towers are crumbling!

This one is on obama plain and simple as is the fear mongering! There is no chance for this country heading in the right direction with this bum driving. If it can be shown that he is cutting things he doesn’t have to intentionally harm or scare people it is impeachable. Like letting criminal aliens out of jail. There is only one reason for that and it’s not money. How anyone can stand up for this tyrant is mind-boggling, I don’t care what party it is. One can only hope.

Realist, I am certain that individuals who had saved their lifetimes for retirement only to experience quarter after quarter of artificially low interest rates would disagree with you. The administration has forced interest rates to all time record lows for a record number of quarters to “stabilize” the housing market and reduce the impact of record spending deficits. Once interest rates return to historical averages, and they will, the full weight of the spending deficits will be felt by the economy when the interest on the debt will be multiples of the current amount. There are winners and losers with this strategy. Not surprisingly, the winners are public employees and unions who have traditionally strong pension programs which are relatively insulated from the low interest rates. Other winners include people who over-extended on home purchases. Losers in this strategy are small business owners and retires who had saved for their own retirement who are now forced to choose between continuing to work or placing their retirement assets into higher risk investments (the stock market) in order to obtain a return. The final losers are future generations who will have the obligation to try and pay back the huge budget deficits and a growing national debt. Last fiscal year the United States government collected more tax revenue than any other year in history and still managed to spend over a trillion dollars more than it took in.
I think you will find very few experts on either side of the political table who will use the stock market as a measure of economic strength. Traditional measures include GDP and unemployment. The unemployment rate remains around 7.9% and doesn’t include the 8.2 million people who have given up looking for work during the Obama Presidency (the real unemployment rate is pegged at 14.7%). As for GDP , it was 1.8% in 2011 and 2.2% 2012 which by any measure are extremely poor. The economy shrank in the 4th quarter of 2012, the U.S debt has increased by 5 trillion dollars in the last four years, the budget deficit topped a trillion dollars last year and unemployment is at 7.9%. Even with the sequester cuts spending this year will exceed 2008 spending by $570 billion dollars and consume 22.4% of GDP (that level of Federal spending as percentage of GDP was only reached four other times in the 63 years prior to President Obama).

Big surprise. Is this article stating that reducing spending by $85B will require change? That there will be impacts from an attempt to move from deficit spending (pass the bill on to our kids and grandkids) to a government where we actually PAY for the services we receive.
Wow!!! What a concept!!! (Sarcasm off).
Yes, there will be impacts to these changes. Does anyone think there won’t be?
I recall in article from the 90s in the Star Tribune on how much federal money the state of MN would lose if the feds moved to balanced budget. It was approximately the Federal deficit divided by the total population of the US times the population of MN. In other words, the deficit spending was equal to $500 per person in the US and if the budget was balanced, then MN would lose out on about $500 per person. Of course, the article was written in a way to get people all up-in-arms about how unfair this was.
Same story years later. If the feds reduce their spending then they won’t be able to give away as much “free” stuff. Oh Horror!!!!!!

I was reading about this issue…the difference in spending is so small it’s hardly worth mentioning. But the media needs a new issue to bleed to death so here we go again.

“Obama owns the sequester?” Yep, ask Mr. Woodward who is being tarred and feathered for pointing that truth out to the world. And no, I will not be using social security or medicare after I retire. What is REALLY “mind boggling” is the lengths the emperors supporters will go to, to protect their dear leader and his massively failing policies. Your children and grandchildren will thank you for your support, when they get old enough to realize what their parents and grandparents have done to them financially, for the sake of being a blind cheerleader of the worst president this country has ever seen. Save your comments, it won’t make a difference, I can see through the B.S. that the country’s being assaulted with.

If Mr. Woodward is being “tarred and feathered”, he is laughing all the way to the bank! He does have a new book to sell, after all. The whole ‘controversy’ has been invented. It’s all part of an overall, carefully crafted, PR campaign. Where has he chosen to spend most of his time hawking the book (and the ‘controversy’)? On Fox News, of course! Everyone should be able to “see through” that line of B.S.!
Thank you for offering to not use Social Security or Medicare after your retire. That will leave a bit extra in the pot for the rest of us.

And I suppose the other reporters that have come out of the woodwork, saying they too have received abusive, threatening messages from the White House have books to sell also? Speaking of abusing the people he is supposed to be leading;

Quoting Breitbart does nothing for your credibility. I know you are not concerned with that, but it gets tiresome pointing out how obviously the far right can be led by the nose to come to unwarrented conclusions concerning anything having to do with President Obama.

REALLY????? There are actually people out there that condone this type of irresponsible, junior behavior???? And we wonder why this country is going down the toilet? It never ceases to amaze me how many people will defend this kind of B.S based solely on the support of the “D,” behind the name of the people perpetuating this assault on the people. Truthfully, do you REALLY think this is OK? Would your opinion be different if it was a republican doing this? I am 100% sure that if it were a republican, you’d ALL be up in arms about this type of B.S. Don’t fool youselves, you KNOW this is garbage but will NEVER admit it because it’s YOUR choice of (failed) political parties that is doing it.
