LETTER: Evolution is a false religion being taught
February 16, 2013 at 6:08 am in The Daily Republic
The theory of evolution makes me so angry. I was wondering if anybody thinks about the first two syllables of the word and sees what it sounds like: Evil.

The thing is………that is I want to say………but how about………if you say this then…..(sighing, shaking head)…
This letter is so ridiculous that I don’t know where to start.
Someone else take it……..PLEASE!!!

With respect Mr. Red. The letter writer is doing a more than adequate job of showing a lack of respect, contempt and generally mocking the hard work of others without anyone elses help. No matter how nicely (or un-nicly in this case) he may try to make his case the simple reality is that he is suggesting that several hundred million professionals from across the globe from hundred of countries are either incompetent or lying. Those people who understand this issue I feel are more than justified in showing there disdain for someone who disparages, insults or makes hypocritical statements. While at the same time showing utter ignorance on the topic they are disparaging.
In society we are hardwired not to trust or like people like that. Just because this individual did it for religious reasons does not mitigate that fact but makes it worse.
As to the letter writers points….. He didn’t really make any. He believes evolution is a religion based on his lack of understanding and lack of effort on the subject. He made no other arguments, points or presented any evidence. Just a statement of belief. The hundred years of continual research, evidence and testing had no baring on what he said and he’d probably dismiss it without even pausing.
In short, he is more than welcome to his beliefs but at no point do I or anyone else need to treat it with respect. I don’t treat the KKK with respect, I don’t treat bullies with respect. Overall, He has shown NO respect for others and so he shall receive no respect from me.

No red I’m NOT saying any belief counter to mine is insulting.
What I am saying is if you are going to spend your ENTIRE time insulting people that is insulting. You cannot provide one positive thing to say. Every post you make is about how much you don’t like evolution, how it’s a “religion” because people don’t know everything. Since when in anything in your entire lives do you know everything? There is not a SINGLE theory that people know everything about. A good portion of building blocks of chemistry is completely unknown; the theory of gravity doesn’t technically work. Are they a religion too? Or just evolution that you apply that standard too? It’s just hypocritical.
Most other people when they talk about their belief they can talk about how it’s better. How there is more proof, or the proof they have. They have something POSITIVE to say. The letter writer didn’t do that he called people evil and you supported him. (I’m pretty sure I and others should be insulted by that.)
If the ONLY way you can support your theory is to try to push everyone else down. To make silly and hypocritical demands or expectations that you have no intention of doing yourself. That that is something I can’t respect.
You don’t respect that behavior in the work place, you don’t respect that in your personal life. You don’t get a free pass because it’s your religious belief.
Long story short. It’s not your belief that I find insulting. It’s your behavior that you feel is acceptable in service to that belief. As a christian I cannot support that.

With respect Wildmouse I was responding to your questions on evolution. Not Abiogenesis. Because you are complaining about evolution right???? Because you seem to be getting chemistry and biology confused. Or are you going to complain about the physics of the big bang next and suggest we should throw out germ theory because of it?
First you ask some fairly silly and easy questions that are solved with a simple google or wiki search. Thinking that these fairly obvious and simple questions were stumpers. As if Professionals wouldn’t have already asked them and come up with evidence in the over hundred years of research.
You even believe that several hundred million people are “mistaken” about several billion pieces of evidence.
I’d consider that calling these hard working professionals incompetent.
So you are more than welcome to believe that evolution is religion but you had better apply that same logic to germ theory, electricity, relativity, most of chemistry, gravity (theory doesn’t actually work) and most other theories that have just as much evidence or accept that you are being hypocritical and applying double standard based on your religious convictions.

With respect Wildmouse your inability to Google is not fault of the theory of evolution. If you spent 5 minuets you would see the many times that evolution has been completed in a lab.
that Dog did evolve into a cat, raccoon, weasel and panda about 40 million years ago by the forces of natural section. Evolution takes time just because it doesn’t happen in front of your eyes doesn’t make it not true.
As to hoax’s. there are hoax’s in everything including the shroud of turin. Does that make Christianity a hoax? Pitdown man was shown to be a hoax by the same scientists you are currently ignoring and it was always in doubt within the scientific community. It also has no baring on the theory but was just one of the million pieced of evidence that proves it.
Instead of spending your time suggesting that millions of professionals are incompetent in there choose field. I would strongly suggest that you instead use that time and read up on the subject, even spend some time on Wikipedia. People are not as incompetent as you’d like to think they are.

Wildmouse… no, I am not saying a god started life, I don’t know how it started. But if a god did, then I just ask who started god?
Evolution doesn’t care about how life started nor must it. If a god or a primordial soup started life, the theory of evolution still stands.

With respect Red. This is a perfect example why people don’t buy in to creationism. Because those who like to critique evolution have ZERO understanding of this science. They come up with things like, It starts off with Evol therefor it sounds evil, that a dog can’t turn into a cat therefore it’s not true. Or my personal favorite, why are there still monkey’s. Or the more common one, scientists don’t’ understand X therefore we must throw out the other million pieces of evidence in favor of creationism…. A theory that has NO evidence, or support and who’s proponents can’t get through more than 3 explanations without contradicting themselves.
Even here creationist proponents spend more time talking about evolution than talking about the positive proofs of there own idea. They have to do this because creationism provides nothing to talk about and doesn’t have any positive proofs just complaints about the hard work of others.
Don’t get me wrong The Theory of evolution doesn’t answer all of life mysteries. It was never meant to. However, it’s beyond hypocritical to suggest that it should be thrown out in favor of a “idea” that doesn’t even have 1 millionth of the evidence, support or use that evolution does.

There is ample evidence that variation exists as a normal part of human development. Some people are born with all sorts of conditions that are in direct conflict with what you just said. If a “mistake” is made in our DNA, it might result in a deformity, but it could just as easily result in improvement of a trait that will ultimately change humans in some way. You really do have to take the long view when it comes to evolutionary changes.

evolution is science, not religion. evolution is the slow change of species over thousands of years as they adapt to surroundings. In effect each division and gain of species or loss of a species is evolution progress. There are many proofs of evolution over many millions of years. It is science based, so evolution should be taught in all schools. It’s only the blind one sided few religious groups that think otherwise. For the better of the planet, all should know all there is about science and the earth’s history and history of species. We don’t know evolution till it has already happened, looking back, humans have evolved alot over the past few million years. Science holds the Facts. Most pastors I talk to even think creationism is a joke.

Smartimus, my objection to the letter is not that the writer is standing up for their beliefs, but it is written in a manner that conveys contempt for other beliefs and is internally inconsistent. For example, the letter writer equates the theory of evolution with evil, that those teaching evolution would be better off being weighted down with a millstone and tossed into the sea than face what they will have to face, and again at the end equates evolution to evil. As far as consistency, the letter writer wants evolution removed from school curriculum because it is a “religion” but demands Christianity be taught in the schools; note, not any religion but specifically Christianity. I have no objection to a person stating their faith, defending their faith and expressing their views in a civil exchange, but this writer clearly has no interest in civil discourse, is intolerant of opposing views and has declared as evil those expressing alternative views.
As for the letters expressed views on evolution, I find the opinion to be very arrogant. Even assuming you throw out any information supporting the theory of evolution, the letter takes the position that because evolution can’t be proven it is therefore impossible; from the letter writer’s perspective it appears that if he can’t understand something it must be the work of God. Ultra-conservative Christianity’s position regarding evolution is no different that the positions it previously took regarding the earth being flat, the earth revolving around the sun and other previously unexplained circumstances that were subsequently proven. I struggle to understand many concepts that require advance mathematics, but that doesn’t mean that those teaching those principals are evil.

Dear Mr. Hayne,
I understand that people who believe in evolution can sometimes be dismissive of religion, and that this may make you angry. But it is a mistake to equate evolution, a scientific theory, with a religion. Scientific theories, by definition, include various hypotheses which can be tested. Evolution as a theory has survived for many years even as we have discovered a wide variety of things about the building blocks of life. For example, not only did DNA give us a mechanism for evolution, but our research on the DNA of seemingly very different organisms has shown that there is significant DNA shared between the organisms, which supports the theory of evolution. For over a hundred years evolution has held up to this type of newly discovered knowledge.
So, does that make evolution a religion? No. Evolution, like all scientific theories would not survive the first disproving fact (and yes, such a fact could emerge, as any good scientist should readily admit). Science is based on evidence, and changes when new evidence occurs. Some call these moments paradigm shifts and they happen more often than you think. Recently, physicists were able to demonstrate that the universe is expanding at an increasing rate. This observation was confounding to many scientists because the most popular theories did not support this fact. So, this in turn led to discarding of these theories. The same would happen to evolution if such a fact manifested. Now, turn to religion. Religions do not posit theories that can be tested. In fact, in all cases they posit notions that by definition cannot be tested. They are based on faith. This does not mean that science and religion are incompatible, merely that they are different things.
Note also that folks will attempt to mislead you regarding evolution. They often point to the lack of evidence for certain things (how did life first happen, why don’t we have fossils of transitionary animals, etc.) and suggest that this makes the theory unsound. While these concerns have not been definitively answered in the case of evolution, the fact that there are open questions does not constitute evidence against evolution. Up until recently some individuals arguing against evolution pointed at the human eye and asked how that could possibly evolve. But research by Nilsson and Pelger demonstrated that an eye could evolve in a manageable number of steps. Note that this does not prove that evolution did cause this, merely that the claim that the eye could not be evolved is invalid.
Finally, I think you should be careful regarding advocating teaching religion in schools. Given our societies focus on the separation of church from state-sponsored activities any religious instruction in a public school would likely have to take the form of comparative religion where some or all of the world’s many religions would be presented, not merely Christianity.

Yours was by far the best comment on this post in defense of evolution RickM. There might not be a conflict between religion and evolution theories in regard to most creatures. I do think there is as far as humans though as the Bible indicates that man is distinct from all the other animals. I think the only real proofs of evolution is the fossil record which I believe is a lot less than people think. Paleontologists sometimes find a single bone fragment yet they are able to put together a picture of an entire creature. A lot of the fossils in collections are mostly plaster recreations centered around a few actual bone fragments. I’ve had a lot of trouble with my faith through the years but to me the most interesting parts of the Bible are the beginning and the end. I just don’t think the people who wrote down the words of the Bible would have known for instance that at one time the earth was entirely covered by water yet they did because I believe they were divinely inspired. I don’t think these people would have known that birds and animals existed before humans either unless they were divinely inspired. They probably would have assumed that all things began at the same time. The thing that really gives me hope though is that the signs of the end times appear to be becoming true. There are a lot of signs to watch for and many of them have begun. I won’t go into all of them here but anyone can Google them. I don’t think that religion should be a required subject in public schools. I do think it’s a good idea to keep an open mind as to the possibility that just maybe there is something to the truth of the Bible. It could be a very costly mistake to reject the salvation message of Christ.

wildmouse: I understand what you are saying, but note that the fossil record does not constitute proof for the theory of evolution. The fossil record merely does not disprove the theory. Just as the many other things we have discovered since then do not disprove the theory (and are in fact consistent with the theory). Science comes up with theories to explain the world we observe, but in the end we generally cannot PROVE these theories. Gravity, despite our continuing experience of it, does not have a proven explanation. We have many theories for it, but in the end we are not sure. And science works on the principle that if we find evidence the theory is incorrect then we have to revise or replace the theory.
Evolution is a theory that would seem to explain a lot of things about the world, and has stood up again and again as we discover new things (humans have a huge amount of genetic overlap even with relatively far different organisms). But this does not mean that I am asserting that I can prove that man is not somehow significantly different. Perhaps there is a difference we have not observed. Perhaps God created the world in this way, reusing useful parts, and gave man something extra. Scientists try to come up with hypotheses about how the world works and then try to test these hypotheses. Some see this as trying to better understand God’s creation. This is certainly my view. But religion addresses different issues from religion.
As to signs of the end times. I am leery. I read the Bible quite a bit when I was younger and was fascinated by revelations. I also read The Late Great Planet Earth and saw the movie when I was younger which seemed to suggest end times were near. But as I got older I read more on the subject and found that people have been predicting end times pretty much since the beginning of Christianity (and in most other religions as well). Some of the signs that were discussed when I was younger seem a long ways away.
I personally enjoy the old testament for the stories and focus on new testament (though without focusing much on revelations), so we are somewhat opposite in the sections we focus on in the Bible. But I see nothing inconsistent between science and Christianity (and lots of people way smarter than me agreed – Newton, Copernicus, Galileo, Descartes, etc.).

I would just like to add that the theory of evolution is supported by more than just fossils. Fossils helped support the theory early on, but it was genetics that sealed the deal. When you combine the differences between dna of species and genetically date a common ancestor, and the find fossils that look like a cross between the ancestors , that is more than just coincidence.
I took a big step there, but in reality you don’t find the common ancestor of humans and cows, you have to step back each trail of ancestors to reach a common one. The Ancestor’s Tale is one of the best books on this subject.
This genetic dating helps scientists know which period of rocks to look in to find fossils. The story of finding the fossils for the ancestor of the whale is a perfect example of this.

Here’s my quick thought on who won and who lost. This is an issue where minds are made up and firm. This is not one of theose issues like where we should put a new park or change some one way streets. You pretty much know going in that no matter how many comments you make or how many links you provide, the folks have pretty much decided where they stand. So now the question becomes what’s the purpose of participation in the discussion? Most of the 88 comments I see are very subtle digs, the insinuation is that the other side is either naive, immature, foolish or just plain dumb. That’s from both sides. I’ve done it myself. So why discuss? Well some might enjoy it as a form of recreation, some think they are honing their debating skills, others might just find it a way to vent, kind of like therapy I guess.
For me I guess, many times it was recreational. Sitting at the computer with too much time on my hands. I’ve had to reassess my motivation though lately, thanks in part to something Ms. McLaughlin wrote on her blog page called “Paying Attention to One’s Intentions” What I was able to glean from that piece is that most everything we do can be assessed by taking a hard look at why we do it. For me if there is no good or goodness value in my motive for doing something, then generally I should question the value of the thing I propose to do.
On issues of faith I believe what I believe. Others believe what they believe. I would submit that this thread is a poor example of an honorable discussion. I know better than to think I can change anyone’s mind by what I write here. Of course anything I do write will be perceived as condescending and I perceive other comments that belittle my faith as condescending. So who really wins? I’ve seen a winner declared here. Really? Did someone change someone elses mind? Is it the green and red buttons? Who took the best shot? Who feels like winner? I don’t feel like a loser. An example of “survival of the fittest”? Really? Based on the comment section of The Daily Republic Newspaper? South Dakota was still overwelmingly conservative when I woke up this morning. Of course I know it was a sarcastic comment, but why? The spirit of competition? A satisfied ego? A sense of power?
To quote McLaughlin “it takes much self-knowledge to pay attention to your own intentions. It takes knowing if you are operating out of a place of power, ego, greed, hurt, jealousy, competition, etc etc, but if one is truly seeking a spiritual life, self-knowledge is already revealing these pieces of one’s self and one is working toward removing them.”
I’m not afraid to state my opinion on any issue I am passionate about and will continue to do so on occasion. I will also make my best effort to always double-check my motivation for doing so. But as far as argument merely for sport? It doesn’t seem to have a goodness value to me. It seems even undignified. I guess I’m just not “fit” enough.
Oh yeah, my quick thought on who won or lost. Nobody.
As Always,

RED I don’t think it’s a matter that people have made up their minds. It’s a matter that neither party is talking about the same thing. The 2 viewpoints cannot be compared, one is a matter of faith and the other is a matter of evidence and observable reality.
You can’t quantify faith.
Some like the letter writer can try to claim that both are a matter of faith. However, try as you might that argument is hypocritical at best and creationists no matter how much they may not like it have made no rebuttle to it.
No matter how you look at it. Creationists have to accept that there belief is not supported by the physical facts. They must either accept that or accept that they cannot maintain a consistent morality.

Wildmouse, this book of life thing, does that mean only people who believe in a religion will be in this book? If you’ve lived a good life except for joining a religion will you be excluded or maybe be allowed in heaven but only allowed to do simple jobs like cleaning up after the people in The Book.

Only Christ knows how he will judge individuals on Judgement Day.

Did you know the Bible talks about people in the old days were made of rubber? It says Moses tied his ass to a tree and walked 5 miles.

And you feel it’s okay to mock a man who was favored by God and who is recognized as God’s prophet by three of the great religions Judaism, Islam, and Christianity?

Wildmouse, did you know God gave people a sense of humor? ( made in his image) Does this mean I’m out of the book?

There sure are a lot of ‘Hidden due to low comment” ratings in this one!
You boys are illustrating quite nicely the “survival of the fittest.”

People thought they were right in crucifying Jesus Christ too. If I’m not popular with the atheists and pseudo-Christians it’s fine with me.

Please tell me Smartimus that you are not so arrogent to think that you are a “true christian” and everyone else is Pseudo-Christian because you take the first sentence in the bible literally?

I don’t claim to be anything, but as to pseudo-Christians Matthew 7:16 is appropriate, “by their fruits you will know them. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles.”

I’m glad we can at least agree on one thing. However, I think we would apply the quote differently.
