Farmington goalie scores an own goal, flips off coaches, leaves the ice
February 13, 2013 at 2:21 am in The Farmington Independent
Farmington senior goalie Austin Krause purposely scored a goal for the other team into his own net, then showed his middle finger in the direction of the coaching staff before leaving the ice in a Minnesota boys hockey game Tuesday against Chaska. Continue Reading

It appears that Austin has very little respect for his coaches, teammates, or school. What he did and now it’s being reported that his grandfather also left flipping people off as they exited. I take it if true that this isn’t exactly a family known for class and respect. I’m sure Austin is having an interesting day at school today.

Good for him? You stay classy Patrick Batemen. This child could have handled things differently. Even if he was in the right, causing his team to lose and flipping off the coaches (CLASSY!) was no way to handle it. Immature, entitled little brat. There’s probably more to the story. Regarding the grandfather, nice to see that the apple didn’t fall far from the tree.

Paul, no disrespect but your comments are very immature and not very well thought out. A coach is the leader of the team, what a coach says goes whether you like it or not. Apparently this kid didn’t and rather than deal with it maturely he went out and made a fool out of himself and cost his team the game. That shows you how much respect he had for his teammates.

You’re far too kind, Hugo. Paul, aka @smellmyfinger, and is comments are anything but real. “Ya’ll?” Really? Oh, and your comment that got hidden, saying it was better than shooting people? Wow. Just wow. Perhaps there was a REASON that certain seniors were benched. Perhaps the underclassmen were showing more skills and maturity on the rink (maturity clearly shown by a senior who could do nothing but raise his middle finger). Perhaps this entitled baby who just assumed that he was varsity material should have earned his spot, not have it handed to him and continued because of his class status.

I’m sure it goes without saying but I assume that he’s no longer a member of the hockey team… either quit or was kicked off by the coaching staff. I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets suspended from school for this little action, the team is a representative of the school. I’m sure his parents woke up this morning so proud of their little angel.

Maybe, just maybe the reason the underclassmen were playing over the seniors was a trait called ” more talented”……

If that’s what it takes to justify your argument, your argument is weak. He acted like a punk. A baby. And a coward. If that were my kid, I would be horrified and ashamed. There is absolutely NO justification for what he did. He needs to suck it up and grow up. He’s a spoiled, entitled little child.

So he couldn’t play as much as he thought he should, well boo hoo. Obviously he has little regard for team work, mentoring the underclassmen, or taking a leadership role of integrity and self-control. Instead, his premeditated cheap show-boating stunt has let the world know of his tantrum-like selfishness and lack of maturity.

As a disclaimer, I was not at the game so my comment reflects folks in the Farmington community I have talked with about the incident and about the program as a whole. For whatever reason, hockey seems to bring out the very worst in parents, coaches and on occasion (such as this incident) players. Attend any hockey game (as I have attended many to watch) and vulgar comments from parents, fans and others is almost the norm versus the exception. Clearly this type of attitude from parents leads to the assumption from our youth that this behavior is acceptable. I suspect that there is a story behind the headlines and probably had less to do with playing time and more to do with systemic problems in the program. The Farmington District administration, school board and others need to invest a lot of time into figuring out who the attitude problems are within the high school and youth programs and get them out! There are codes of conduct that need to be followed from coach down to the player.

It comes down to this backwards town and Farmtowners vs newbies………it’s the good old boy system, esp when it comes to sports, I can speak of this particularly when speaking about community ed sports/FYBA teams………they are so unfair, unless your parent is on the board or you’re friends with someone on the board then you don’t advance and you’re stuck on a team that is crappy with no decent coaches and crap practice times……..however, IF you are on the board/of friends of on the board then you get A/B team status without regard to how you play, you get prime practice time and 3 coaches. It is sad that their mission/goal don’t match what they actually do and once you’re put on the crap team you never get off. We will see how it works out for the future but Farmtowners (bred, born, schooled, married and never left Farmington) don’t like change and they balk at it and so it’ll always stay the same. Wishing I would have bought a house somewhere else but alas I’m stuck unless I want the hassle of moving.

On the other News site others are upset about judging……..OF COURSE we don’t truly know his motivation. That cannot be “judged” .But it is absolutely appropriate to “JUDGE” public behavior. What about the gangs jumping people down in MPLS..I am sure they have some REASON that seems logical to them…but we can’t JUDGE their behavior? People don’t understand the use of the word judgement anymore. To NOT determine (judge) this behavior as out of the socially acceptable norm means to condone it and to JUDGE it as good! The lack of one means the other. Since he is young, he doesn’t realize that such things will follow him if he has ambitions in most career areas. It’s a very small planet and employers use the internet for indications of a person’s character.

Funny what people will do when they have nothing to lose. Latest story is he told his team mates what he was going to do and they had no problem with it. By looking at their schedule it was their last home game. They have one game left at Shak and then regionals where they will be one and done anyhow. Curious to see if other seniors just say screw it also.

It certainly seems as if there is more to this story than meets the eye, especially if young Mr. Krause confided in teammates what he was planning to do, and was successful in following through. Regardless of who is in the wrong or in the right, it’s a sad way to end the last home game of the season for a team.

my guess is if he did confide in team mates about it ahead of time and no one said anything then it points to all signs that this guy is a bully and people were afraid to speak up, thankfully, my son has said that if someone came to him and told him this he would let the coaches know even if the bully said not to.

I don’t agree. I don’t believe you are born with character. It is developed. By your experiences. By your interactions with others.
Practicing. Learning to put team above self. Being subjected to disappointment (losing). Winning (and learning to be gracious while winning). These all are character traits that are developed and strengthened in a well run sports organization. Note: I said it had to be organized with a leader who LEADS.
I will agree with your statement that sports reveal character, especially the actual games. Probably 80% of the character development occurs behind the scenes, practicest etc. But the character is shown in games.
There are other ways to develop character than just in sports and it certainly is much harder for a coach to develop character in an individual if that person doesn’t already have a core that has been developed.

Then why have coaches at all? All the practices. They aren’t fun. Training. Conditioning. Why work to get better? Why keep score?
But I guess that is just being elitist. JUDGING some to be better than others. Competing even if you might not be the best.
I think HS sports SHOULD be about learning life lessons. This boy obviously didn’t. Likely not ALL his fault, be he is responsible for his childish actions.

That post pretty much says it all. You could have continued trying to explain away this kid’s actions, but those efforts would have been an exercise in futility because other peoples’ common sense would have allowed them to refute whatever you decided to toss out there as *possible* or *plausible* justifications for his actions.
So….you tried the “funny video clip” approach instead.
“Hey, it ain’t exactly relevant, but the giggle-inducing video clip might make folks forget that I have no valid points to make….”

I still only laugh at how serious of an offense people made this out to be. In the city here we worry more about underage drinking, pot smoking, guns, gangs, identity theft, fake id’s… You all crucify a kid for a bold form of expression that was completely harmless to anyone, including himself. Unreal! Don’t be so critical…

I’m still laughing at your attempts at backpedaling. First of all, who thus far has “crucified” him? Second of all, who thus far has said his juvenile tantrum is more serious than drinking/drug use/identity theft?
He behaved in a childish manner and several people have called it what it is. His actions weren’t “bold”. He didn’t “take a stand” on anything. He waited for an opportunity to pull his stunt when there was the LEAST amount of possible consequences for him. The timing of his stunt, (as in when it took place in the season), also guaranteed that his “protest” for more playing time wouldn’t actually net him more playing time….even if his efforts were successful.
When it comes to taking a stand, Rosa Parks he is not. He’s just another kid that has seen countless examples via the internet and/or reality television of how to get noticed by behaving badly. Sadly, those same examples have taught other valuable lessons as well…such as what can be expected as far as consequences are concerned.
He chose a late-season or end-of-the-season game in which HE WAS PLAYING, to:
-score for the other team
-walk off the ice
-flip off the coaching staff
And you’re buying into the notion that it was ALL about the injustices he faced, and therefore what he did wasn’t only justifiable, but admirable somehow.
Good grief.

Wow — the site I mentioned yesterday had a zinger message posted today. Very interesting! And, no, I did not write that!
http://lakeville.patch.com/articles/farmington-goalie-throws-game-flips-off-coaches-leaves-ice-forever#youtube_video-13358390
Bill: “What he did was wrong, wrong, wrong, but is a symtom of something going on with the team. He saw 4 freshman make the team before tryouts, he saw 4 freshmen start the first game like they were the top players, he saw one of the freshmen be given a goal and some assists by the coach that he didn’t earn, he saw one of the freshmen taken out of a physical game because the coach thought he might get hurt, he saw a freshman come back after an injury not having to play JV, when others have never played a regular shift on varsity after injury, he saw the bus pick up a freshman from home when he missed the bus when last year they made the leading scorer miss the section game because he missed the bus. He may know of the conflict of interest that the coaches daughter is coached by the freshmen’s dads, or that he is good buddies with one of the dads. Oh and by the way the freshmen who are forwards have not added any value to the team no matter that they have had twice the playing time. the two freshmen defensemen have been very good. He saw all the unfairness and related it to his situation of not getting playing time he thought he deserved. What he did was wrong, so is what is going on with the coaches and the four freshmen.”

So the site had a “zinger message” posted. If what was said in the “zinger message” is accurate, doesn’t it strike anyone as being odd that it would need to be reported via a “zinger message” on an internet board?
Was all of this going on and yet only THIS individual was aware of it somehow? And if all of this WAS going on and this kid had had enough and decided to “do something about it”, why would his course of action be to wait until now, and then walk off the ice during what he says was his last game? How would that rectify the alleged injustices? How does scoring a goal for the opposition change anything? And last but not least, if his list of gripes includes things like certain people “making the team before tryouts”, then doesn’t his walking off the ice AFTER making the team sort of rub some salt in the wound for some kids that may have actually tried out and not made the team themselves? What if you were the kid busted his butt in tryouts and didn’t end up on the roster because someone beat you out for a position…..only to walk off later on?

Oh, I see. If someone busted their butt and tried to make the team and didn’t….they should just get over it and move on.
Fair enough.
Why shouldn’t someone who made the team only to discover later that it wasn’t ALWAYS going to go EXACTLY the way he wanted….just get over THAT and move on as well?
And you still didn’t answer my other question either. You seem to want to believe that post with all of the “reasons” this kid was upset, yet you haven’t offered up any explanations as to why nobody BUT this kid was aware of things like how ineffective other players are/were.
If I were trying to come up with an explanation for the nonsense you’ve posted so far, I’d guess that you’re one of those individuals that has a general contempt for authority and/or authority figures. The coaching staff in this scenario just HAS TO be the “bad guy”.
And you’ll keep posting ridiculous stuff in the hope that you’ll get in the last word, because you think the “last word’ will lend some validity or credibility to what you’ve shared so far.
Good luck with that.

Well it doesn’t surprise me that this coward aka Austin Krause handled things the way he did……..apparently his dad was suspended from attending hockey games for one year due to an unrelated incident. Just goes to show you that a parent/s that don’t teach their kids to respect others and that there are many better ways to handle this sort of situation. When I heard my kids (from Farmington) talking about this incident, we sat them down and went over ways he could have handled this that would not be something that haunts him for the rest of his life……..when he goes to apply for a job, they will see this and he will be denied and then will cry that’s not fair or whatever. You reap what you sow and this coward will get his comeuppance.
