Argh! The following comment has nothing to do with whether teachers, homeowners, students, small business owners or employers who hire veterans should pay less taxes. These changes are bad because they represent more social engineering through the tax code(s) and fail to address the underlying “problems” that provide the justification for the new law. Congress and Minnesota need to stop mudding up the tax code(s) with special deductions and credits and focus on real tax reform that creates a system that is both easy to comply with and transparent. The average Joe shouldn’t need to go to a tax professional to prepare his/her return. Congress and State Legislators should stop pandering to special interests by enacting special deductions and credits.
With regard to the portion of the article indicating that veterans have a 23% unemployment rate will the overall state rate is 6%, that is deplorable. Still, correcting the problem with tax incentives does nothing to address the issue of why veterans are not getting jobs at the same rate as the rest of the population. I am hopeful that there are very few employers that are refusing to hire veterans on the basis that they are veterans (to the contrary, I think that most employers prefer to hire qualified veterans). Adding tax credits might get a few more veterans hired in the short term, but it fails to address the root cause of the increased unemployment for veterans (it may be related to health issues, qualifications or maybe I am wrong and it is discrimination). This is simple an example of Congress and State Legislatures enacting ineffective laws that provide tax breaks without addressing the real problem so that they can claim they support veterans and small business through increased tax credits. Congress and State Legislatures need to stop the vote pandering and do the heavy lifting that will actually address the real cause of the unemployment, not just treat the symptom to buy a few more votes.

I’m just saying I know some people that are teachers and they pay taxes. They have to pay state, federal and fica. So, I didn’t understand where Kevin was coming from.

Ron, small business owners may benefit or they may not benefit. Providing a tax credit at the same time as budget deficits requires someone else to pay more tax, some other expenditure to be cut or additional deficit spending. Your post confirms my earlier post that these special credits and deductions are nothing more than payments for votes that provide no solution to the issues they are supposedly tied to. The tax code needs to be gutted of all of its preferential treatment of one social circumstance over another. A graduated tax system wiithout additional deductions and credits can be both progressive and transparent.
