Obama urges immigration overhaul
January 29, 2013 at 3:34 pm in Worthington Daily Globe
LAS VEGAS Declaring “now is the time” to fix broken immigration laws, President Barack Obama on Tuesday urged Congress to put millions of illegal immigrants on a clear path to U.S. citizenship while cracking down on businesses that employ people illegally and tightening security at the borders. It’s just another amnesty for illegal aliens. It’s already been tried and failed!

Legally, amnesty focuses on a group of people and grants them a permanent pardon. The Obama administration’s policy could reasonably be said to focus on a group, but deferring deportation is not the same as forgiveness and the relief it offers is limited in time.

Here’s an answer that may shock some here, and will probably earn me a lot of “thumbs down” votes but, I think Mr Rubios plan is a good one. They are here, we are not going to be able to, physically OR financially deport them all. Most, not all, of the jobs these people have are jobs most of us don’t want to do. They harvest fruits and vegetables by hand, day after day, sometimes in quite adverse conditions, yet while we sit back behind our desks in air conditioned buildings, we enjoy the fruits (and vegetables) of their hard labor while “B”ing about them being here. The thing I am concerned about is our president not wanting to work with the people on both sides of the aisle and wanting it “his way” again. Enforcement of our borders IS a very important part and should be taken up before any type of program is instilled. A good bi-partisan plan has been introduced, it may need some tweeking, but once again our president stands in the way for possible selfish, political reasons? Reagan did it with the promise of securing the borders so it wouldn’t happen again, well the borders were not secured and “here we go again.”

I agree with 99% of what you said. However, the President is not standing in the way of anything. There is “broad agreement” and in the last paragraph it states that “strengthening border security” is key. The president isn’t being “selfish” or “political”. If anything, the Republicans are being “selfish” and “political”, since they now realize they cannot ever win elections without support from the growing minority populations. John McCain said as much. What other reason would they have for this “dramatic shift”?

Somebody should give this so called law professor a civics lesson! If the congress doesn’t do it my way, I’ll have a bill and make them do it. A, no Mr. Dictator wannabe, you can’t make congress do anything! What an arrogent jerk. There is a bi-partisan Senate group that has already crafted most of the details of a reform. You sir, can sign it or veto it when it comes to you. Until then, shut up…

Dear “law” dog.
The President doesn’t need a civics lesson. You, though, could use a reading comprehension lesson. Read the article — again — and you will see that the Senate and White House proposals represent a “broad agreement”, a “dramatic shift” in Republican behavior, and a “focus on the same principles: providing a way for most of the estimated 11 million people already in the U.S. illegally to become citizens, strengthening border security, cracking down on employers who hire illegal immigrants and streamlining the legal immigration system.”
So, explain again how this is a “dictatorship”? How is what he said “arrogant”, if the parties are in “broad agreement”? Or is your reaction based on something more deep-seated?
You take your own advice in the last sentence of your comment.

What you describe lawdog is accurate. What it is called is “Chicago-style politics. It’s ruthless but very effective. Figure out who the enemy is and go for the throat. Obama sees half the American population as the enemy and any Rebubican or Democrat who stands in his way. Stand in his way he will “take you out”. He’s basically a thug.

Once again, you have portrayed President Obama in negative terms. If he is not out there advocating for military intervention, then he is leading from behind, but if he gets out there and commandingly takes charge he is being a despot. As has been suggested, I believe your problem with President Obama lies with you and not with his actions.

Seems the hard right oppose anything Obama proposes just because it comes from him, even if they support the proposals. Most of the proposals have had bipartisan support in the past and in fact, the Republican party has voiced support for immigration reform recently.
The only one’s screaming are the wingnuts and it’s the wingnuts that have helped kill the Republican party.
President Obama’s proposal for immigration reform has four parts. First, continue to strengthen our borders. Second, crack down on companies that hire undocumented workers. Third, hold undocumented immigrants accountable before they can earn their citizenship; this means requiring undocumented workers to pay their taxes and a penalty, move to the back of the line, learn English, and pass background checks. Fourth, streamline the legal immigration system for families, workers, and employers.

It can take up to 28 years to legally immigrate to this county. Seven years in the best case scenario.
We need to overhaul this out of date, broken system.

Kevin is right, this is just another form of amnesty. That being said, I do agree with ellamay…..both sides will ram this through so it’s our job to make sure the border is secure FIRST! Israel built a fence and the suicide bombings dropped by 99 percent. Put inmates to work on the fence, hire the unemployed, do whatever it takes to completely secure the border.
No more anchor babies, no welfare if your not a citizen, no obamacare, and no extended family members until you are a citizen should be part of this bill.

It’s really obvious you didn’t get the memo on how to toe your party line.
Your party has moved on immigration reform. Your party, for whatever reason, has decided that yes, it’s time for immigration reform.
Most everyone is against amnesty. This isn’t amnesty, only your misguided interpretation of it.
When it regularly takes 28 years to immigrate legally, then building walls 100 feet thick and electrifying it won’t help. They will find ways to go around, over, under and through it.
It’s long over time to overhaul the system of immigration.

That 28 years only applies to a really small amount of the most undesirable immigrants who really aren’t trying. 3 to 7 years is more like the actual time to citizenship legally. That doesn’t mean you have to wait that long to come here either, you can get here in a mater of months if you are accepted, if you are not accepted you shouldn’t be here anyway!

Now if the newly arrived illegal immigrants can learn to read and write English which I’m sure the can’t wait to do, they’ll be well on their way to amnesty. How is it that we owe illegals citizenship?

I have no party! It is illegal immigration I would kike to bury, not the people but the concept, which will require a big tractor. The average illegal comes with less then a 7th grade education so how much reading they do is questionable. That explains why they vote dumb, if they were smart they would vote the other way as business (mostly republican) provide their paycheck making it possible for them to be here, period! Makes me wonder who is really burying themselves?

“I agree with 99% of what you said. However, the President is not standing in the way of anything.” He absolutely IS standing in the way! It is NOT his job to make laws, that is the job of the house and senate as stated in the constitution. He is constantly circumventing the jobs and actions of congress because it isn’t what HE wants. He needs to stop dictating and step back. Let congress do their jobs.
“strengthening border security” is key,” yes it is, so why is he ignoring the current laws when it comes to immigration? Why are ICE agents suing the feds for not allowing them to do their jobs? It’s pure political B.S. by the Obama Admin.

“What other reason would they have for this “dramatic shift”? It’s a game BOTH sides play to try and stay in power. Obama was against gay marriage at first, why the “dramatic shift?” Why has he turned his campaign organization into a non-profit, tax exempt organization, that does nothing more than campaign for their emperors wishes? Have you EVER seen anything like this before in our countries governmental history? He needs to stop thinking of himself as a king, and follow the constitution he swore to defend and uphold. Circumventing constitutional requirements at every turn is NOT what his oath of office said.

When did illegal become acceptable in this country? Obama and the government (Fed & State) ignore the laws they don’t want to follow. Citizens of other countries ignore our laws. Business ignores laws. Drug dealers. How do you teach the kids which laws to obey? We have had some really stupid lawmakers and enforcers over the last few decades! This country needs to get back on the right track before we end in a huge train wreck! Illegal immigration would be a great place to start, send a message. I have great hope but little faith!

Deano, you have described the feelings of most America loving, law abiding, common sense people including myself. The ILLEGALS have known for years (Since the last amnesty program that was supposed to end this crap) if they just wait long enough the govt. will cave and give in. We got hoodwinked last time when the border was supposed to get secured, companies hiring ILLEGALS would get fines huge enough to deter doing it, ect. ect. ect.
I feel like our elected officials are holding a gun to our head and making us choose between securing the border and grant amnesty or do nothing at all and let the ILLEGALS continue to pour into OUR country.
Since most of our elected officials are spineless, politically correct, look the other way buffoons, I will swallow hard, take a deep breath and go along with this piece of junk legislation IF:
The border is 100% secure BEFORE any next step
No more anchor babies
Speak proficient English
No bringing extended family.
No govt services i.e., welfare, medical assistance ect. If you can’t make it here on your own, no work visa.
And yes, Ellamay is right, obama would have an open border and give the illegals all the rights of a U.S. citizen if he could get away with it.
Remember folks, obama got 51% of the vote, not a landslide by any stretch of the imagination.

1996 election winner 49.2% (47 million), loser 40% (39 million)…3rd party took 8%
2000 election winner 47.87% (50.4 million) of the vote, loser 48.38% (51 million)…blame Florida for the winner having less votes than the loser.
2004 election winner 50.7% (62 million), loser 48.3% (59 million)…also winner considered their win a “voter mandate” by just winning.
2008 election winner 52.9% (69 million), loser 45.7% (60 million).
2012 election winner 51% (66 million), loser 47% (61 million.
Point? None of the elections in the past 16 years are landslides. To dismiss Obamas win due to just “51%” is silly and shows a lack of election results current history. Baby boomers whites are declining with each election but the hispanic vote is a wave of new voters. The party that they favor can have a long run in the whitehouse. Even the GOP is starting to see this. Maybe attempting to bring back that “big tent” idea that they have clearly shown to have turned away from in the past years.

1981-1993 Two Republican presidents and what did they do to secure the border? Nothing. 2001-2009 Republican president with control of the house and senate for almost the entire time and what was done to secure the borders? Nothing. Who is it that are screaming to secure the borders? The same people who did nothing. Explain please how the people who did nothing now for the last 4 years have been crying that Obama has done nothing to secure the borders? When in fact he has deported more people in 4 years by far than the Republican president did in 8 years. So who is the weak one?

Sorry to lay some more facts on you. Illegal immigration has shrunk over the last 4 years. In fact there has been more leaving than coming in. Also you sure seem to love to bash Obama while saying nothing about the previous 8 years when people were pouring over the border. But then again there was a white Republican in the White House.

“Nothing since many of their contributors were the ones that were hiring them.” From what I can find, that seems to be pretty much a 50-50 split on who’s hiring them. Remember Bill Clintons string of Attorney General nominees that couldn’t past muster due to the hiring of illegals?
And Obama had 2 full years with control of both houses and did nothing. As stated before, he does not have the power to pass legislation, he can sign the bills or veto the bills, so he needs to go back to his golf course and allow congress to do it’s job without interference.
