After fiscal cliff drama, paychecks shrink as rhetoric expands
January 2, 2013 at 2:26 pm in Grand Forks Herald
Americans will pay Washington more, despite rhetoric from politicians saying they shot down most tax increases on New Year’s Day, and in the aftermath of what widely was described as a flawed federal budget bill the public should expect more federal fiscal drama in coming months. Continue Reading

GOP or Dem, I no longer care.
What i want to know is how dang stupid do they think we are?
No budget for 4 years? Are you kidding me? Who’s at fault for that and whats being done to fix it?
I am supposed to be happy to do my part and pay more in taxes to help the nation. Okay, so why cant i expect the same government to stop spending the money like its no big deal?
Foreign Aid? How many more millions do we need to send to people who hate us?
Troops still in Afghanistan? Why?

….. cut off …….
Unemployment benefits extended…again! Why?
People will go to work when working is the better option. Stop the unlimited benefits now!
Pork barrel spending, enough is enough already!
Of course, through all of this The President has managed to give the VP and Cogress pay raises. (They definatley earned it after all)
Take our taxes, pay our bills and thats it!
I really dont see how on earth anyone in this country can defend this inept leadership.

On another blog I posted after the election that I expected the gridlock to continue. Until Washington really gets the message that business as usual is not what is expected we will get more of the same.
Compromise is the art of the political arena, but this kicking the can down the road because they cannot make the hard decisions simply to not piss of the constituency is getting old.

You are correct Mav: things will continue as before until Congress gets the message. Unfortunately, the hard truth is the American people (GOP or Dem) do not want change. If they did they would vote for it. So far, the turn it down every time it is available (Ross Perot, Ron Paul, etc etc etc).
As we all have said: GOP like to spend and give to the rich. Dems like to spend and give to their base.
We do not have one single person in power on either side who does not like to spend.
Sure, there are a few rogue Congresspeople out there, but not in numbers great enough to get anything done.
In America you get what you elect. The problem is not in Washington. It is in the mirror.

Yet like happy lemmings, “we” keep voting for Democrats and Republicans. The problem is folks think that one side, “their” side is the answer. Problem is is that both parties are infested and crippled by special interest groups. Here’s the solution: (easy to write in this blog-near impossibility to enact!) Demand that congress and the senate create a bill that makes donations from special interests illegal. And limit donations from individuals or businesses to $50, including the candidate themselves. $50 per SS number for an individual or business Fed ID number. Provide lobbyists with one day a year that they can interact with Senate and congress. Provide 6 minute slots (2 minutes before and after to move to the next rep), and make it a “speed conference with your representatives”. Didn’t finish in 6 minutes? Too bad, see you next year (no emails, phone, nothing outside of that)

We need term limits! How can Conrad be known as a fiscal hawk when the senate has not produced a budget in over 1300 days? We also need a real media.

Agreed, but we can make our own term limits: Never vote for an incumbent and that problem is solved. The internal power dramas would be drastically reduced.

“While income taxes will rise only on the richest 2 percent, the federal Social Security tax will go up.” is a true statement, I prefer to look at it as a 2 year temporary reduction that expired and had been the only the second time in the history of the program (the other was for one year in 1968) that the tax had been reduced.

Oh, you mean the democrat controlled Senate didn’t originate this bill? I guess all the state run media was lying. Obama signed it, last I heard he was a democrat of the spearman persuasion. Compromise isn’t the holy grail when compromise in this case just guarantees economic disaster. What is going to be Boehner’s undoing is his willingness to compromise on the democrats’s planned catastrophe.
Hot debate. What do you think?

This bill originated in the Senate. Check the record.

I agree. It’s a matter of perspective. We had a temporary reduction in SS (a stimulus to the economy). Removing the stimulus SS cut should not be considered a tax increase. (Though many do see it that way.) Some people are born complainers, maybe MOST people.

To wake up the low information voters, a tax increase may be what we need. Then send every year a bill of what the gov’t overspent and what that person owes, maybe people would wake up…

Remember that Pelosi told us that food stamps help the economy even more than jobs.

In 2010 Nancy Pelosi said: “If you want to create jobs the quickest way to do it is to provide more money for food stamps and have unemployment insurance.”
How does that create jobs? It doesn’t. It raises our taxes. It takes more money out of the pockets of people who want to create jobs.

The only way at this point to get low info voters to see the light is to hit them in their freebies. Half the country gets some form of govt money…its no wonder we’re in the mess we’re in. And to say a good portion need it is simply foolish. The entire system is being abused for political gain and the repubs are jumping on board because they see it as the only way to win. When its all said and done…significant damage will have to be done to the economy before folks get their minds right. I wonder, when the time comes, how many of YOU will be on board with cutting off the freebies despite the gnashing of teeth that would follow? This is the core issue we’ve been ducking for many years now. Pointing the country in the right direction without upsetting a voting block. And look where its gotten us?
