A rush to arms in Grand Forks region, around nation
January 2, 2013 at 2:50 pm in Grand Forks Herald
Grand Forks area businesses have also seen new interest from people who want to arm themselves, following a similar national trend following the shootings in Newtown, Conn.

How sad that criminal, treasonous politicians have made such a mockery of the Constitution.
Obama is the best thing that ever happened to those in the Second Amendment business; and among the worst things that ever happened to the Second Amendment. (And for the same reason!)
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if people actually had full, unrestricted access to all of the Bill of Rights?

Oh that made me laugh. Truly shows that you know nothing about guns and calibers. I use a .223 REM for varmints, a .270 WIN for deer, 12 gauge for pheasant, and .338-378 magnum for moose. Those are the different sizes needed for the job at hand. i.e. the different tools. Oh and the 2A isn’t about hunting its about protecting freedom. Just to clear that up.

In the USA, more assaults are done with baseball bats than anything else. Why does any team need more one bat? They can only use one at a time. A person can only use one golf club at a time so why have more?

Hugo Chavez outlawed private gun ownership in Venezuela all in an attempt to take weapons away from people who oppose his style of government. Yet he lacks the capacity to enforce it. The country had over 21,000 people murdered in 2012. Many of the deaths were members of the opposition party who were conveniently unarmed. The only reason legal guns are confiscated is to give the leader of a country total control. It’s not about guns. It’s about control. I’m glad I don’t live in Venezuela.

You answered your own question spearman. We do not practice free market laissez-faire capitalism really anywhere in the world. In the US we practice a form of fascism. Don’t forget, the corporation is a child of the state, and as long as you advocate for some other form of government that involves having a state, (i.e. anything other than anarchism) you will have special interests getting favors from the masters of the state.

Why then, does socialism appear to lead to a much stronger state? Is it because people need to be forced to give up the product of their labor socialism needs to co-operatively manage the economy, or because Marx and Engels theories in practice have no market feedback mechanism, leading to shortages, famines, poor quality, and laziness? Even the proletariat ends up enforcing unwanted rules at the barrel of a gun.

Registration would be the first thing the government would need to do in order to begin confiscation. Wise patriots realize this. Gun grabbers take rights little by little, if all they can get is a 29 round limit instead of 30 they would take it, and next year ask for a 28 round per magazine limit.

Re Ron “The new legislation will be based on responsible gun ownership. I would like to see a registration of all firearms and mandatory gun safety classes for all gun owners. Hunter safety and/or conceal and carry permit holders would meet the requirements of already attending a gun safety class. Niether of these steps would infringe on your “rights”.
As a believer that no one should have to ask permission to defend themselves, or for the tools with which to do it, I still can understand where you are coming from on this one. The issue for me is where does the gun and/or owner registration stop? Who is the gate keeper of your system; the government, or our fellow citizens through some other organizational means? Who will stand in between responsible owners and those who would abuse the system for their own gain? For arguments sake I could see owners having to belong to some sanctioned organization, say the NRA or GOA for instance, that would provide the training necessary that would require the state to issue a permit to own any or all firearms. No database of actual weapons owned would be kept that could be misused down the road.
I do believe the NRA’s response to the shooting was tone deaf, and as a responsible gun owner, I am willing to work for a solution to the random attacks we are experiencing. However, incremental bans and/or registration will not solve the problem, which is undefended gun free school buildings, and will only lead to more incremental bans and so on until we are totally disarmed and the problems are still there.

Owning a firearm is a responsibility that I take seriously. If you can’t keep track of them and one gets stolen without your knowledge and you don’t report it as stolen to the police, sure. Maybe a fine, and sentenced to purchase and install a gun safe, I don’t know. Sure there will be extenuating circumstances, but that’s what courts are for. You can be charged with reckless driving, why not reckless gun ownership? Gun owners have to step up to the plate to help solve these problems or we will be handing them all over in a short time.

LOL…not surprisingly “ron” believes in another tax.
“What privacy would be taken away? Do you have a problem with registering your car at the dmv?”
A rifle or handgun is not the same thing as a vehicle. In a vehicle you are presumed to use it to drive on public roads.
What I do with my private property is my business, hence, if I want to buy a vehicle and park it in the driveway and use it on the occasion that I need to go to a hospital in a life saving emergency….I should be able to do that…If I need to drive it on a public road then I need a license and registration.
Now…if I can drive this vehicle across private property to get to the hospital…do I need to register the vehicle?

Personally I view any tax on firearms and ammunition as a poll tax. It should be illegal. The second amendment guarantees the right to bear arms, just as there is a right to vote and all votes are counted equally. A tax on weapons is a poll tax, just a way to prevent some from owning them. It should not be allowed.

You assume that gun rights advocates are ccw holder…not necessarily so
You assume that gun rights advocates are hunters…not necessarily so
You assume, that all governments are benevolent….in spite of all the obvious evidence to the contrary.
For example… a gun owner that used to live in Cuba…and has now escaped to the United States….he might believe that he needs a weapon to protect him from the Government…now the government comes along and makes him a criminal if he doesn’t register his weapon.
It seems to me that his suspicion is well founded.

Oh yes, thanks to Fienstein et al…there are thousands of laws on the books that restrict gun ownership.
That is why when they want to create more laws….people that are able to process information in a logical manner, have difficulty understanding their reasoning.
But the fact is, the only way to stop these people from acquiring weapons, is to confiscate all of the weapons or incarcerate all the people.
That is what most dictators and tyrants do when they take over a country, they confiscate all the weapons…Thomas Jefferson and his freedom fighters could have done the same thing when we forced Britain to give us our independence.
But it appears, that just the opposite occurred….wonder why?

I guess the implication is that this is a laughable viewpoint, so you chuckle at the ignorance of the writer.
From the Star Advertiser—-Hawaii
“A 51-year-old U.S. Postal Service worker on Kauai is in federal custody on charges that he possessed a fully automatic rifle and used someone else’s firearms license to order a firearm from the mainland without the other person’s permission.
Troy Haruki Hamura, of Lihue, appeared in federal court Thursday afternoon wearing a white prison jump suit.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said when its agents went to Hamura’s home last month to question him on the purchase of the firearm he ordered from the mainland, Hamura turned over to them 19 unregistered firearms, including the automatic rifle, an M-16A1.
When federal agents went back to the home Wednesday to execute a search warrant, they recovered 10 rifles and 20 handguns, all registered to Hamura, and 23 rounds of ammunition, Assistant U.S. Attorney Tracy Hino said in court this afternoon.
Hamura is not charged with any crimes involving the 30 firearms and ammunition.
The court’s pretrial services recommended releasing Hamura on bond pending a determination of probable cause on the charges.
Defense lawyer Keith Shigetomi said Hamura will work in his family’s business. His family runs Hamura Saimin Stand in Lihue.”
You will see that the government “went back” and “recovered” all of the weapons that he had previously “registered.”
however—–
“Hamura is not charged with any crimes involving the 30 firearms and ammunition.”
So, it appears, (from the limited info in this article) that a man who has been charged with a crime, not convicted, charged….has had his personal property taken away from him by the Government.
I guess that is kinda funny….

Someone trotted out this canard again: “In homes with guns, the homicide of a household member is almost 3 times more likely to occur than in homes without guns.”
Here is the facts: http://www.justfacts.com/guncontrol.asp
Roughly 16,272 murders were committed in the United States during 2008. Of these, about 10,886 or 67% were committed with firearms.
* A 1993 nationwide survey of 4,977 households found that over the previous five years, at least 0.5% of households had members who had used a gun for defense during a situation in which they thought someone “almost certainly would have been killed” if they “had not used a gun for protection.” Applied to the U.S. population, this amounts to 162,000 such incidents per year. This figure excludes all “military service, police work, or work as a security guard.”
* Based on survey data from the U.S. Department of Justice, roughly 5,340,000 violent crimes were committed in the United States during 2008. These include simple/aggravated assaults, robberies, sexual assaults, rapes, and murders. Of these, about 436,000 or 8% were committed by offenders visibly armed with a gun.
* Based on survey data from a 2000 study published in the Journal of Quantitative Criminology, U.S. civilians use guns to defend themselves and others from crime at least 989,883 times per year.
* A 1993 nationwide survey of 4,977 households found that over the previous five years, at least 3.5% of households had members who had used a gun “for self-protection or for the protection of property at home, work, or elsewhere.” Applied to the U.S. population, this amounts to 1,029,615 such incidents per year. This figure excludes all “military service, police work, or work as a security guard.”
* A 1994 survey conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that Americans use guns to frighten away intruders who are breaking into their homes about 498,000 times per year.

“he is suspected”
So….as far as you are concerned….it is “guilty until proven innocent.”
yeh…I think that is how they do it in other socialist countries also…so….for you…things are looking up.

“The government is a potential enemy?”
Duh. EVERY government since the beginning of time has eventually abused it’s citizens and needed overthrow–if it survived long enough. Some of them ended prematurely when neighboring countries invaded, of course.

Self styled realist, maybe you should get your history books out of mothballs again. Throughout history the state has been the most prolific and efficient taker of human life on our planet. I am sure many Germans did not think Colonel Stauffenberg was being treasonous to his country when he tried to murder the tyrant that was in charge.

basically what bob said. Not the government per se. Just remember all politicians take an oath to uphold the constitution. That would include the second amendment. All sorts of bills are being introduced to limit 2A freedoms right now, and all of them are not getting the support needed to pass. (whew).

” If the government is your enemy I believe you are doing something wrong/illegal.”
Well…alrighty then….obviously you believe “guilty until proven innocent” is the way to go…
Thanks for making my point.
Ever hear of the “Innocence Project?”
Facts on Post-Conviction DNA Exonerations
[Print Version]
“There have been 301 post-conviction DNA exonerations in the United States.
• The first DNA exoneration took place in 1989. Exonerations have been won in 36 states; since 2000, there have been 234 exonerations.
• 18 of the 300 people exonerated through DNA served time on death row. Another 16 were charged with capital crimes but not sentenced to death.
• The average length of time served by exonerees is 13.6 years. The total number of years served is approximately 4,036.
• The average age of exonerees at the time of their wrongful convictions was 27.
Races of the 300 exonerees:
187 African Americans
86 Caucasians
21 Latinos
2 Asian American
5 whose race is unknown
• The true suspects and/or perpetrators have been identified in 146 of the DNA exoneration cases.
• Since 1989, there have been tens of thousands of cases where prime suspects were identified and pursued—until DNA testing (prior to conviction) proved that they were wrongly accused.
• In more than 25 percent of cases in a National Institute of Justice study, suspects were excluded once DNA testing was conducted during the criminal investigation (the study, conducted in 1995, included 10,060 cases where testing was performed by FBI labs).
• 65 percent of the people exonerated through DNA testing have been financially compensated. 27 states, the federal government, and the District of Columbia have passed laws to compensate people who were wrongfully incarcerated. Awards under these statutes vary from state to state.
• An Innocence Project review of our closed cases from 2004 – 2010 revealed that 22 percent of cases were closed because of lost or destroyed evidence.
Leading Causes of Wrongful Convictions
These DNA exoneration cases have provided irrefutable proof that wrongful convictions are not isolated or rare events, but arise from systemic defects that can be precisely identified and addressed. For more than 15 years, the Innocence Project has worked to pinpoint these trends.
Eyewitness Misidentification Testimony was a factor in 72 percent percent of post-conviction DNA exoneration cases in the U.S., making it the leading cause of these wrongful convictions. At least 40 percent of these eyewitness identifications involved a cross racial identification (race data is currently only available on the victim, not for non-victim eyewitnesses). Studies have shown that people are less able to recognize faces of a different race than their own. These suggested reforms are embraced by leading criminal justice organizations and have been adopted in the states of New Jersey and North Carolina, large cities like Minneapolis and Seattle, and many smaller jurisdictions. Read more.
Unvalidated or Improper Forensic Science played a role in approximately 50 percent of wrongful convictions later overturned by DNA testing. While DNA testing was developed through extensive scientific research at top academic centers, many other forensic techniques – such as hair microscopy, bite mark comparisons, firearm tool mark analysis and shoe print comparisons – have never been subjected to rigorous scientific evaluation. Meanwhile, forensics techniques that have been properly validated – such as serology, commonly known as blood typing – are sometimes improperly conducted or inaccurately conveyed in trial testimony. In other wrongful conviction cases, forensic scientists have engaged in misconduct. Read more.
False confessions and incriminating statements lead to wrongful convictions in approximately 27 percent of cases. 28 of the DNA exonerees pled guilty to crimes they did not commit. The Innocence Project encourages police departments to electronically record all custodial interrogations in their entirety in order to prevent coercion and to provide an accurate record of the proceedings.
Informants contributed to wrongful convictions in 18 percent of cases. Whenever informant testimony is used, the Innocence Project recommends that the judge instruct the jury that most informant testimony is unreliable as it may be offered in return for deals, special treatment, or the dropping of charges. Prosecutors should also reveal any incentive the informant might receive, and all communication between prosecutors and informants should be recorded”
Looks like your method of “guilty until proven innocent” would be responsible for more deaths than all the recent killings…..
so maybe you’re right….you don’t need a gun
ignorance works just as well.

One of the recent exonorees——–
Damon Thibodeaux of Louisiana:
After 15 years on Louisiana’s death row, Thibodeaux relocated to Minneapolis in September. He has recently moved into his own efficiency apartment. “It’s small,” he says. “But it’s bigger than my last accommodations, and I have the keys to it.” When asked what his plans are for the coming year, he has a single-word response: school. He plans to study to become a paralegal. Does he hope to practice law someday? “Let’s see where this takes me,” he says.
Read this case, then tell me again about your “neutral” government.

The story is not theory…it is fact.
Zimmerman was out doing a job, that I would imagine, you would have no interest in doing. He was protecting his neighborhood and himself.
Imagine if you had been on the street, happened to look at Trayvon the “wrong way” and Trayvon decided to punch you in face and put the boots to you…
My guess, you would be praying for someone like Zimmerman to come along and save your butt…

Once again you have everything bass akwards…..If someone is stalking you and you confront him…That makes you the predator? So like Zimmerman you too need a gun in public so you can feel free to check out anyone who doesn’t sit right with you? Nice call…

Zimmerman was not stalking anyone. If he had been stalking theTrayvon, Zimmerman would never have been punched in the face.
You have it backwards.
And how about Trayvon doing what all the liberals advocate?…if Zimmerman was bothering him, all he had to do was walk away.

Treyvon stepped up like a man? Since when is it a manly trait to confront someone who is simply following you by beating their head into a curb? And then to turn around and flex your muscle by saying not all libs are pacifists? Yeesh…you’re all over the place Tundra. Maybe the “pacifist” label is put on libs because they don’t stand for anything that doesn’t involve some kind of wishy washy emotion. I’d figure, you wouldn’t defend yourself because it would make you feel bad and guilty. Keep on kidding yourself as it concerns the Martin issue. You don’t hear much about it anymore now do ya? You know why? Because the death of this young man has served its purpose within your party. They squeezed all they could outta the racism angle, and now they’ve moved on to gun control. You should be so proud of those you vote for.

Funny thing is, Treyvon had no other injuries on him but the bullet wounds…meanwhile Zimmerman was beat to crap! Tells me how the sequence of events went. I still believe that zimmerman should have left it to the cops after the phone call…but he continued to monitor someone he suspected to be up to no good…and the confrontation ensued.
