Progress seen in last-minute ‘fiscal cliff’ talks
December 31, 2012 at 5:22 am in Grand Forks Herald
Working against a midnight deadline, negotiators for the White House and congressional Republicans narrowed their differences Monday on legislation to avert across-the-board tax increases. Continue Reading

To me, Obama has made it very clear that his only goal is to increase taxes on the rich, the top 2%. I hear conflicting reports on the impact it will have, but I think it is reasonable to agree on that taxing the rich is not going to solve our problems. The country is changing, the work environment is changing, and we have a Government that does not want to change. Programs need to be reformed and we cannot continue to spend without consequence. Things are not as prosperous as they were, overseas countries have taken our work. As a country, we spend like we still are booming. Close loopholes that the wealthy are taking advantage of but do not place a tax burden that will discourage people from working hard. I have yet to see a pro sports team say we are going to accept mediocre players because its fair for everyone, they take and reward the best. Thats what America should be about, rewarding people who put in the extra effort and go that next mile. My opinion is best summed up in “Give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach him to fish and he eats for the rest of his life”.
Hot debate. What do you think?

Obama and congress already know how to fish. They are the ones giving a fish to the rest of people and Then taking credit for the good that they done for the country. (which is nothing).

Football….great example. A game owned by billionaires, played by millionaires, makes billions in revenue, and has stadiums paid for by tax payers……Yes….The wealthy really knows how to milk the system. That’s the real welfare bums

Watch when they lower the ceiling on the Death Tax and mortgage deductions are eliminated.

They’re actually talking about raising the ceiling on estate taxes not lowering them. FYI

If you listened to the news today you will have noticed that while it is very clear that they cannnot settle this fiscal cliff problem, they had no problem giving themselves a wage raise.

Come on Bill….When they say everyone is going to have to tighten things up…..You didn’t think they actually were referring to themselves did you? That’d be crazy.
That is part of the problem. They can do that, and they live pretty lavishly in DC so eventually they really lose connection with working class America….Is it any wonder we’ve been squeezed to the point of popping like zits?

I believe that was eliminated from the final version.

They want to extend the unemployment benefits???
That´s part of our problem, paying people for years that aren´t working. These people think they are entitled to the job they want, at the wage they want, where they want it.
Get a job, any job, and get off government welfare!

Are you including farmers on this?
See all the farmers siting in the bars during the winter complaining.
Maybe they should get 40 head of cattle, so they have some employment for the winter.

Absolutely right…Cut unemployment so there’s an even bigger homelessness situation in America. So what if they fell victim to corporate greed? Damn bums…Let them find shelter below the Sorlie

Sounds good to me.. They have families to fall back on.. Maybe people will start saving for a rainy day instead of trying to ‘keep up with the jones’

Then you must have lived a pretty protected life if you honestly believe that. I see the homeless a lot….I’m sure they’re out there because they just didn’t save up for a rainy day once work dried up. If you honestly think homelessness is that black and hire….Then you need to travel a bit and see areas away from ND and MN where we have a lot of hidden homeless. Then again you are a right winger so having no heart in such matters does fit

I am a right winger on some issues.. Yes you are correct. I have lived all over this country and this world honestly over the course of my life. I have only been back in this area for the last 10 years or so.. I have lost a job and was unemployed for some time (almost 10 months). But I had savings to fall back on and was always out pounding on doors, and doing what I could to improve myself and find work.
But being a complete liberal nut job you wouldn’t see that.. You are so dependent on someone giving you something, whether it be your job or your self respect you can’t see the forest through the trees.
If you read what I wrote, I imply that people will have to fall back onto their families for help. Is this a bad thing? I don’t think so. It would also put the onus back onto the Church and families to help those that cannot help themselves. Again I don’t believe that is a bad thing. People may actually start saving funds in case it happens again instead of just throwing their paychecks so they can live in a 4000 sq. ft house when they really only need 1200 sq ft. There are many things from past eras that we have ‘removed’ from our culture that never should have been removed.
But then we all want to live the the ‘Life of the Rich and Famous’ and have Robin Leech interview us right??
/rolleyes

Yes i do get you sentiment…It’s just much deeper than mere personal responsibility with a lot of unemployed who can’t find jobs

I’m dependent on getting things? Really? So where did you arrive at this gem of knowledge in all your worldly experience? I’ve worked since I was about 18. Did a lot of construction (The really tough stuff…Bricks, Cement, Steel, and worked oil derricks, even was a carney for a couple months when hitch hiking around the country) I did heavy equipment for a while and about twenty one years ago I decided to get into this trucking gig and have worked at my current company for nineteen years come March. So if I’ve had things handed to me…then who the hell has been intercepting them, because I’ve only been getting what I’ve earned through real sweat and effort?
Maybe I was a bit harsh on your original comment, but I actually did live a homeless lifestyle when I hitch hiked around the country, but I always did have family to go back to when I wanted, and I was young, and there were jobs always available to a young strong man back then. I could leave when I wanted to, but many can’t. I did mine in the fair weather of summer, and many have to endure real weather. So when I first read what seemed snarky it got my Irish up
Look…I like debating with you and really don’t want to get into an all out affront like there is between myself and a couple others. I mean I’ll accommodate if need be, but would prefer not to.

The politicians created this mess, then they want us to think they’re heroes for fixing part of it, and covering the bulk of the disaster with cat litter.
Screw ‘em. It was their fault to begin with; and it’s going to get a lot worse before it gets any better. Anyone who says differently is lying (but then, that’s what politicians do.)
