Column – Ban assault weapons, once and for all

“Guns don’t kill people.”
Go tell that to the parents of 20 dead children in Newtown, Connecticut.
“Guns don’t kill people” is just one of the many deflective slogans so dear to the hearts of gun worshippers. Continue Reading

“The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to allow the subject races to posses arms. History shows that all conquerors who have allowed their subject races to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by doing so.” -Adolph Hitler 1938

is the goal”–(Janet Reno)

I have a relative who thinks along the lines of this column. She’d like to see ALL guns CONFISCATED.
I don’t know about Dennis, but my relative owns no guns, and has never even shot a gun. Funny how the far left always seems to want to take away what the rest of us have.
They come for my taxes, my religion, and my guns. I’d like to hear, just once, what they would like to give up to make this world a “better” place.
I’ll keep clinging to my God and my guns thank you.

I personally don’t own what they keep calling an “assult rifle”. However, if they succeed in banning them, the next on the list wil be (and already is according to Dianne Feinstein) my semiautomatics. Then, what the heck, let’s just go for my shotgun too.
They keep dismissing the statement that guns don’t kill people. I’ve never experienced a gun to go off by itself. It is always the PERSON committing the act of murder.
Ban “assult weapons” once and for all? They were already banned once. The ban was dropped because it was a flawed and pointless effort.

Maybe a ban on all guns is the way to go…in fact I propose we start by banning them from all criminals 1st. Lets start with cities like D.C. and Chicago. Let them impose the strictest gun laws 1st and see what happens! (Sarcasm).

Lets ban guns like they did with switchblades with the exception of course for a person with one arm. Nothing like inane laws to made the country safe from everything while making it dangerous for everyone.

NO GUN LAWS ARE NEEDED! What is needed is a system that will help care for the mentally ill who commit these crimes. Over the past 30+ years this country has ignored the mentally ill by turning them out into the streets. The mentally ill have been ignored and as a result we have these ugly shooting incidents happening. We need to have compassion for the mentally ill while at the same time protecting society from them behaving poorly as a result of being ignored and thrown into the streets.

Okay, you just blew my image of you completely out of the water with that. A very sensible position. Yes, Adam Lanza needed help and, unfortunately, he wasn’t getting it. If the rumors turn out to be true, it may be that what set him off was his mother’s attempt to finally get him help (too little too late, though). Unfortunately, even with improvements, the mental health care system will still not be able to get help to everyone who needs it. However, we should still make those improvements, of course, because anything done to try to stop another tragedy like Shady Hook is a good thing.

Jay, sometimes my comments are intentionally tongue-in-cheek. Please do not take all of my postings so seriously. My opinion above though is a serious one. Take care!

“Assault weapon” is a meaningless term. It has absolutely no set definition and is used solely by gun control advocates to try to scare people. The way they talk, you’d think Adam Lanza pulled the trigger once and the result was a machine-gun spray of bullets. Hardly. The semi-automatic weapon Lanza used didn’t work that way and he would have been able to just as easily murder just as many children and adults with a couple of semi-automatic pistols. If he had, would you want to ban those, too? Probably, because in truth, it isn’t “assault weapons” you’re after. It’s ALL guns. Yes, if they take away the so-called “assault weapons,” the next step absolutely will be the rifles and handguns. Thousands of people are murdered with guns every year and the vast majority of the time, the murderers are using handguns. The only solution — such as it is — to that you as a gun-banning zealot can advocate is to ban handguns. Of course, it is an entirely undeniable fact that when you ban guns, then only criminals will have the guns. Criminals don’t follow the law and that is proven in American cities with the nation’s strictest gun control laws.

Is it the guns that are the problem or is it the Lanza’s or gang members of the US who illegally use the guns?

I’m not even going to try attacking the totality of Dahlman’s latest ravings, because the rest of you have already done such a superb job of it.
I just wanted to focus on one line: “If they ban assault weapons, next they’ll take our huntin’ guns away.”
Our “huntin’ guns.”
“Huntin’.” Doesn’t that speak volumes about how contemptuous liberals are of the rest of us? Huntin’. To Mr. Dalhman and his ilk, we’re all too stupid and crude to pronounce the word “hunting.” Anyone who believes in the second amendment is just an ignorant rube, I guess, in the liberal playboook.
Remember the presiential campaign in 2004 when John Kerry, an icon of arrogant East Coast liberalism, walked into a sporting goods store in Ohio and said, “can I get me a huntin’ license here?” I’ll never forget it, because it also spoke volumes about how contemptuous people like him are of people like us.
My compliments to everyone above my post for thoroughly, thoughtfully and articulately refuting Dahlman’s latest diatribe.
