It is a brave thing to do in this country to come and say you are agnostic. Especially out here in the rural area, where almost everyone seems to be a christian. I myself am an atheist. I do not feel like I can be open about it because of the current public outlook upon atheism. Seems like we are nearly at the bottom of the ole totem pole, right above the muslim terrorist. I am the same as you tho, I don’t have a problem with someone wishing me a merry christmas or happy hanukkah . I actually say it right back. I understand that they are just tying to be nice and are simply wishing me well. Too bad that often times just the opposite effect happens when I say happy holidays…I just wish people would understand and realize that we are not all the same. That is the idea behind “happy holidays”. I am trying to be inclusive. It works. The christians seem to think that they are constantly under attack, when what is really happening is we are becoming more diverse. There should not be a prayer before the county board meeting unless they are willing to include everybody. A moment of silence would be more appropriate. I don’t have a problem with kids praying in school, as long as they are doing it on their own. I would have a problem with organized prayer where everyone is expected to participate. We need to realize that we are all human. We all have the right to be accepted for who we are, just so long as we are not hurting anyone else with our way of life…

I am also an atheist. I celebrate Christmas, and even sing carols! I personally would not want to deprive my children of the numerous wonderful memories from my childhood that surround this season.

The phrase “Under God” was not officially added to the pledge until June 14, 1954. And which God is this nation under? Or is it in response to the belief that there is a higher power in the universe, not necessarily a “religious” meaning?
