1. This matter has been unsettled for over 30 years. I hardly consider resolving it now to be rushing.
2. The counties will receive the same compensation as they do now. What Ongaro and others seem to consider a “loss” of revenue is not getting more.
3. Of course the land coming to the state will be used to produce revenue and jobs — both of which help taxpayers.
4. Selling the land to the feds is not the correct solution as a) there is already too much federal land in NE MN and b) the federal government is broke
5. Opponents and delayers of this swap are motivated by an insatiable desire to expand the non-productive land of NE MN.
The land swap as passed by the legislature, signed by the governor, and passed by the US House is the right thing to do. We MN taxpayers have been cheated long enough by this land locked inside the BWCA. Let’s get it out and put it to work for the region.

What’s this with John Myers comment, “the bill is being rushed through”? For cripes sake, it’s been 34 years on the shelf. That’s over 1/3 of a century. Johnny come on, use a better choice of words. Just tell it like it is…the environmental wackos use emotions to mislead people that it is being rushed, when if fact, Congressman Oberstar had over 30 years to take care of it. Deception is a more apt description of this comment.

I don’t have any problem with the land swap. It’s time to start allowing the land to earn money as it was intended.
The idea that the land would be exempt from ANY federal environmental rules under the National Environmental Policy Act is pretty scary though, considering there could well be mining going on there.

There will not be any mining allowed on the lands within the BWCA, the law doesn’t allow it.
If lands traded outside the BWCA have mineral rights, then mining could occur on those lands, just as it has for over 130 years. Funny…mining has been a part of the region for that long, yet people long to come up here and enjoy the pristine wilderness. Strange phenomenon indeed.

Hey folks, you should have been there! After a dutifull recognition of a local politician as “THE MAYOR OF IRON COUNTY (MINNESOTA)” THE BOARD DID NOT RECOGNIZE ANYONE FROM THE AUDIENCE THAT WANTED TO TALK ABOUT AGENDA ITEMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The agenda was accomplished in less that 60 seconds and away the Iron County Railroad went!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
