First, why is the animal seen as a “threat” and why does the land owner think he needs to carry a weapon to protect himself?. Mountain lion attacks do occur but are rare and people who reside in mountain lion country do not feel it necessary to carry weapons when they venture out of their homes. Secondly the reporter likely would have found by contacting some DNR people knowledgeable about the research that has been done on the cats mentioned in the article that the mountain lion likely came from the Black Hills in South Dakota and was probably an adolescent male.
