Why are they sending a 23 yr old bear to be bred? I recall reading last week that 23 yrs of age is not the ideal age to breed. So, after she has been traumatized from her ordeal in Duluth, moved to another zoo where she’s had health issues, she is going to be transferred yet again to be bred? This just sounds like selfish and greedy behavior to me. Bring her home!

Beemom: We can’t make assumptions about what’s “traumatic” for an animal. These are professional bear keepers and vets who’ve made this decision. Why not see if she can become a mom? There are only 37 polar bears being bred in captivity – Duluth should be proud of our girl Berlin! The zoos want what’s best for her. You can read about why this decision was made on the Lake Superior Zoo’s blog.

Whatever! Absolutely, “We can’t make assumptions about what’s “traumatic” for an animal”. By all means, we should allow the “professional bear keepers” the opportunity to see if the past-her-prime bear that has recently been through a flood, move, surgery, another move, the opportunity to be “a mom.” How many children have you had, Geffory? I am very proud of Berlin. I just feel like the girl could probably use a break. Find her a friend, a partner in crime. Now is not the time to whore her out.
