Actually, that has been done. Copies of David bear a fig leaf. Many years after Michelangelo finished his Last Judgement frescoes at the altar of the Sistine Chapel, a subsequent pope had a hack go in and paint over everyone’s private parts. I believe that was removed a little while ago by restporers.
