They certainly did in Ely for decades. From the 20s through the 60s, Ely had mining, logging, and much more tourism than today. An underground mine employing hundreds of workers and hosting visiting contractors and customers will expose the area to more potential tourists who will want to enjoy the offerings here. Visit Ely today and see if you think underground mining (there were five operating there at one time) repels tourists. What hurts tourism are limited services and restrictions on activities.
