Local view: Legal wolf slaughter is all about fun and trophies

The wolf hunt is on. The gray wolf was removed from the endangered species list in January. A hunt that threatens to decimate the animal in Wisconsin started Oct. 15 and won’t end until Feb. 15. Electronic calling, baiting day and night, and then, bam, a wolf caught in a leg trap because he or she decided to lope through the forest.

Well, I might use less emotive language but I, by and large, agree with this writer.
We, as a society, need to think about what it is we’re doing by bringing back a “hunting” and trapping season on this species. It really doesn’t make sense from an animal “management” standpoint. Trapping a wolf is positively barbaric.
I come from a hunting (as in,,, accurately put,,, with dogs), shooting, archery but in all cases SPORTSMAN / CONSERVATIONIST family.
Do you really trust the DNR in Wisc, Minn? I don’t. Politics and lobbyists have no place in this domain.
I object to the new PC word “harvest” that is now taken at face value to the killing (yes, it is killing believe it or not) of an animal. And has anyone else heard the argument by some that we are “harvesting a renewable resource” like as if it were trees we were cutting down.
A tree is not a pack mammal with a highly organized social structure. A wolf is.

Thank you Blighty, I so agree with your comments. Trapping is absolutely unacceptable. I am also very bothered by the word “harvest” as if they are mere plants being cut down.

I tend to disagree with the OP, and with this comment. Mother Nature can and will take care of overpopulation in species, but with so many involved in the key variables that affect this particular population, management is the best answer. Utilization and management leads to continued successful existence.

The “so many involved” is one species only, ours…I wonder where the management is really required.
