This rule is the classic bureaucratic over-reaction. The Captain in the crash which promulgated these rules had his ATP and the required number of hours. These rules would not have prevented this accident.
These rules are a solution in search of a problem; and some bureaucrat’s attempt to leave his/her mark on history.

That article is not correct. As a flight instructor there, we don’t fly up to 50 hours a week. Probably more like less than 20 hours a week of actual flight time if the weather is good and even then that’s optimistic. I know several who make no more than 10 or 12 a week. There’s also talk about how we don’t really like teaching and we are here for just the hours…its true.
