With NHL lockout, UND men’s hockey is most followed team in North America
November 21, 2012 at 4:28 pm in Grand Forks Herald
UND is averaging 11,730 fans per game this season slightly more than 100 percent capacity at Ralph Engelstad Arena which beats out the top-drawing teams from the American Hockey League, the East Coast Hockey League, the Central Hockey League, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, the Ontario Hockey League and the Western Hockey League, among others. I don’t understand why…It seems that fewer away games are televised now. This would be a good time for the promoters at UND to jump on the bandwagon and get all UND Hockey Games televised. I’m sure the Alumni all around the US would appreciate it. The name was taken away, and now it seems so is watching the games on TV. Is there some kind of plan at UND to try and diminish the Hockey program? Kind of looks like it to some of us…..lacking a BETTER explanation.

One more thought…UND is heavily investing in the UAS program… And UND has a good Media Department…why not also invest more in our own Media and Journalism Departments…it could go along way with savings on Televised Promoting of UND and ALL of our programs and activities to larger markets.

Can I add high definition broadcasts to that list? It is painful to watch games on TV in standard 4:3 definition TV. It does not do The Ralph justice.

Didn’t FOXCS let the UND contract expire? Before that Midco must have been outbid by FOXCS. Nothing to do with UND downplaying hockey coverage I don’t think.

I believe venue size has a lot to do with “und being the most followed team in north america”. How many non nhl stadiums can seat 10000 or more? Plus it is only late november, most casual fans are still cheering on college football on Saturday nights. I wonder what notre dames attendance was yesterday? I can’t imagine it was very high with a football matchup with usc for a national title game birth.

Actually there are many more 10,000+ seat hockey arenas around the country than we think. There are @ least 4 just in the WCHA. Many of the 100+ minor pro teams play in large new civic centers all across the country. That doesn’t even include the junior teams in the US & Canada. In a yr. or so the junior team (16-20 yr.) in Sioux Falls will be playing in a larger arena (12,000) than the Ralph.

Fcs shows most und home games. New england sports network has been picking up a few wcha games recently. Und at st cloud and mn at vermont were on there recently. If und could get away from midcontinent they would have a shot at producing a decent television broadcast. It is sad that students at st cloud state provide a higher quality product than midco can produce.

Maybe in Grand Forks. UND headed up to Anchorage and managed a crowd of fewer the 5000 cumulatively for 2 games. The big Notre Dame series this weekend? Total of 9755 for the weekend. Don’t kid yourself; UND hockey is not the be all and end all of the Universe.

Michigan is having a tough time this season. 5-7-1 overall, 6th in the WCHA, unranked nationally. I guess Red would call this a building year.
