I think charging for admission to Frontier Village would be ridiculous. When I was able to visit last summer – for the first time in 30 years, I was struck at how much I was still able recognize. The outdoor amphitheater which I and the rest of the “Youth Community Theater” built in 1969 and 1970 is still there, albeit better furnished and more up-to-date, than the last time I saw it. The railroad depot, which my Scoutmaster, Bob Heyer obtained from the Burlington Northern still dominates the top of the amphitheater hill, and the schoolhouse where we had out publicity photos taken for the “Sun” still looks the same. The only thing I didn’t enjoy, was the admission charge to walk through the buffalo museum, which I didn’t feel was worth the money. The whole point of Frontier Village -for those that don’t remember – was to add some context to the Buffalo, and give folks a reason to stop and spend money in Jamestown. Unless Jamestown has suddenly acquired the Cachet of a Midwestern Las Vegas, that reason still holds. Charging admission will only drive away sightseers and visitors, and give the exact wrong impression of the “Friendly Buffalo City”!

I wasn’t aware that the mayor was also a comedian. One thing’s for sure – she’s ridiculous.

Visitors usually buy food or stay here and pay the food and lodging tax, so yes they pay something towards the tax bill already. By charging admission, those visitor will just turn around or take pictures from the Interstate.

The locals pay a heck of a lot more in taxes than the tourists.
Are people afraid that the Frontier Village wouldn’t be worth the price of admission?

If you start charging people to visit Frontier Village, you’re sticking a knife in your own back. We have a hard enough time getting people here, so leave the tourist attractions free. Most of them buy something in the stores at the Village, anyway, but if you want less visitors here, guess go with Mayor Katie’s unrealistic idea. I’d rather see more people come to town – so don’t turn them away when they do come.
