Man, 94, is evicted for refusing to disclose assets
November 20, 2012 at 6:00 pm in Duluth News Tribune
A 94-year-old World War II veteran has been evicted from his apartment in Port Wing in part because he won’t say what’s in his safe-deposit box.

Here’s my feeling on this one: I would MUCH rather have my tax $’s going on this MAN’S help for room and board, since he’s served this Country, probably worked at least 40-45 years of his life, paying into this insane system, and he’s 94 flipping years old! Rather than having my tax $’s paying on the low-lives that have NEVER worked 1 day in their lives, and just keep pooping out them babies, by 5-7 different daddies and having to only pay MAYBE $100 a month on rent, and get about $200-$300 a month in food support, free medical care etc.! I’d hand over my tax $’s to the older GENTLEMAN gladly!!!!

Right on Julie…Yet we pay for welfare immigrants that move here, provide free NEW housing for mama & kids, and the drug dealing baby daddy of the day; provide free food, free Medicaid, free transportation, free education, free phones, free this, free that; yet DON’T CHECK WHY THEY have money for drugs, alcohol, and prostitution.

My cousin is active duty USAF. If she takes advantage of a subsidization program to obtain help in buying a house, she has to show proof of income & assets.
This scenario is NO different. None. You are so beyond apples/oranges. This isn’t DHS demanding to see your ID as you scratch your beanbag on Superior Street. This guy is participating in a program that explicitly states the requirements, which include asset verification, and he’s not living up to the contract he agreed upon.

94 years old, and still tough as nails! That old warrior deserves a medal for just plain being a hard a$$ at his age. Hang in there, and keep whatever is in that box to yourself old timer!
And Julie McUrton, you are 100% correct! I agree.

Both sides are right, both sides are wrong, and the only real winner is the DNT & other sides with ad-click revenue.
Is the system broke? You bet it is. I spent quite a while working in the Central Hoodside, and know exactly the situations Julie’s discussing. We had a scan of a receipt that was just incredible. Over $150 of nothing but junk food & microwave burgers, all paid for with EBT, but their cigarettes paid for with a $100 bill.
However, if you play the game, you have to play by the rules. A contract was signed, and it needs to be honored. Period. We can’t just start setting a new precedent on hundreds of years of contract laws for sad stories. And if what’s said is accurate (big if) it sounds like the county went out of their way to provide alternatives.
Which is the crux of a urination-match. No matter who wins, both sides get wet & smell like pee.

No one is saying all those people are bad and I bet most have legit reasons for the help they receive. Especially during these hard economic times. What they are saying is if they help all those why not this guy.
So what happens when they open his deposit box and there are nothing but memories of a long life?
Looks to me like on over reaching government taking an old mans last bit of pride and is a prime example of what Obamacare well bring us.

I would take the older gentleman into my home, site unseen and unknown to me, any day, over a youngster who knows absolutely nothing about life and responsibility; These older folks, like him, come from a very different time, trust me, I know, I was adopted by 2 people born before the 1920′s, and I’m only 50 now, so do the math! They are both deceased now, but I grew up learning just how very hard their lives were, most men never completing anymore than 7th to 8th grade, so they can quit school and go to work to support their families, as my father did, because his dad died when he was just a small boy, under the age of 8. Then he worked up until he went to war (world war II) and got back in 1945 or so and went back to his job he left to go fight for this country, and worked until he was 58, being forced to medically retire early, due to his physician telling him and his company that he must retire early or risk a very early death; Thankfully he was able to retire early and still live quite comfortably until his death at age 83. These older folks could still run circles around MANY of the younger generation today, which is WHY they will always have my complete respect and admiration, and I say “More power to this man” for standing his ground and saying “Screw you”; you sir, have my complete backing on this matter, and I wish you all the luck in the world! God bless ALL you senior Citizens!

And what about a hard-working 20 year old going to school, working full-time vs. the arrogant senior who thinks they should have everything handed to them?
Much like my other post, there’s a large amount of people who think that just because they reach a certain age, they deserve to have everything handed to them on a silver platter.
There are good people of all ages and there are bad people of all ages. Your blanket statement is a pretty crappy & naive view to have.

Patrick: And many of those seniors that think they should have everything handed to them on a silver platter are 99% correct, after all, as I previously stated, they, at their ripe old age, could STILL run circles around these youngsters at age 20 and in college who MOST of the time, want to take the EASY way out of situations, or hide from their mistakes, unlike the seniors who will MOST often stand up and FIGHT for EVERYONE’S rights….nuff said, have a GR8 Thanksgiving everyone!

If you want housing assistance because you genuinely can’t afford to put a roof over your head, that’s one thing. If you want housing assistance because you just don’t want to tap into your savings, that’s not going to go over very well. It has nothing at all to do with his age or his veteran status.

People have this affinity for seniors, like living to a certain age grants you immunity from breaking rules, breaking laws, or generally just being a b-hole. If he really can afford the apartment then that means he’s blocking someone else who needs it. And we don’t know since he’s blocking access, which was in the agreement that he’s in violation of.

Yep.
As much as I want to give him a pass for his service to our country, there are rules in place for a reason. The only problem is when those rules are enforced unevenly.
I prefer a system where we focus on the behaviors that the law is trying to prevent, rather than just broadly swinging the hammer and occasionally hitting some innocents. The problem then is that someone will complain that they are being discriminated against due to their age, sex, sexual orientation, religion, race and shoe size.
Everyone is part of a group of people who are discriminated against.

Some get it…some seem to use as launch pad to push their twisted racist stereotype view of world and promote conservative idiotic soundbites…This story smacks me in fact more of every once and awhile there will be a news story of someone perpetrating fraud on system, a single example, but then the conservative and clueless will then wail that everyone is because of it…as some have done.
Whatever is in the safe deposit box is clearly of great value that knew was an asset that would get him kicked out over anyway. Comical that some are harping about baby momma’s blah.blah, ripping off the system. Guess what folks…this guy was ripping off the system and getting housing subsidy wasn’t entitled for…HELLO? That he’s a WWII vet doesn’t change that fact. So it’s really a story of a thief that got caught and busted that happens to be an old Vet.
To be clear…I think the Vets who’ve put their lives on the line for us, put themselves in peril for us and suffered because of it deserve all the help we can give them.
Trouble is we don’t…we actually turn our backs on them…we see this story and think it’s tragic, and think this one old guy shouldn’t be thrown on the street after serving his country, well, he was stealing. But the harsh reality is we’ve turned our backs on our Vets and ignored helping them, repeatedly. If you think this story was sad then consider that every single night, over 190,000 of those experiencing homelessness that night, are our Veterans. That’s right, of the almost 800,000 people that experience homelessness every single night of year, 1 out of every 4 is our own Veterans. That’s just one night. Over the course of year over 400,000 Vets will experience homelessness.
Having worked a homeless shelter where saw far higher percentage then that as they were mostly all veterans the site worked last few years there, sure, a lot of them have drug and alcohol issues but when talk with them it was almost always coming from self medicating or from PTS or difficulty coming back and adapting. Some had disabilities and injuries that caused them pain daily. The one with issues that been carrying a bullet in head for decades, the other shot in head and lost part of brain and has a plate etc.
The real trajedy and travesty is that we can help the needy in foreign countries, we can talk about spending more and more for yet more for military armaments, we will give aid to other countries in need at drop of a hat…but helping our own?
Should be our number one priority but it isn’t. Some even want to stop helping those here in need. Claim that those getting assitance are all just lazy, undeserving and trying to take a free ride at their expense. Can we be less compassionate? Can we possibly be more removed from understanding the issue? I know none of volunteers ever thought that that worked with or for me at homeless shelter after just one night and I did that for a lot of years.
They aren’t lazy, they’re not trying to rip off the system, they’re people….they’re OUR people. We shouldn’t be looking for way to help them even less, we clearly aren’t doing enough if pushing a million people a year are homeless and eating at shelters every single night, many our Vets and some with children, some with handicaps. So please show same compassion for all those in need that are showing for this thief just because was a Vet. Please show the same compassion for the one’s struggling with bullets in brains and fighting demons after fought for us and consider them next time you hear that we really need to do less and cut welfare and assistance to others to save you money.
Oh, and if you really know of someone that is ripping off the system, that is undeserving, that is taking advantage of it, then it’s your duty to report it as a fraud. There are hotlines set up for that. If you can’t do that, if you really don’t know for fact anyone that is….than exactly why and how are you assuming it must be true? and why the hell are you then repeating it?
Do some work at a shelter or with the poor and then see how feel. Easy to condemn others behind a monitor and act tough, go sit down and talk with them and then see what think. Probably the most often heard phrase from new voluteers at shelter their first night was the stark realization that these were people and the realization that they weren’t different as assumed when said with look of shock on face…~ We’re only a paycheck from this could be us”
We’ve lost our way on so many things. We’ve traded school books for bombs and instead of a war on poverty, there’s now a campaign to have a war on the poor. We aren’t doing enough for our own and some want to do even less…is that really the path to making America great?

We are denying a 94 year old vet his dignity and privacy in the name of fairness and equity…rules are rules. But, we let illegal aliens cross our borders and give them free education, medical treatment, and likely eventual citizenship with the right to vote for those who choose to waive the rules. It appears not all rules are created equal…
