What’s next: City starts over after failed Home Depot redevelopment plan
November 19, 2012 at 4:20 am in South Washington County Bulletin
A developer’s plan to redevelop Cottage Grove’s largest vacant retail space fell apart last week, dealing a setback to city efforts to rehabilitate one of its most visible commercial properties. Continue Reading

This is why I moved out of CG and went to Woodbury. How can a city this size not have any community ameneties. Yes, the splah pad is nice, but other then that its pretty dull. Nothing for the kids to do and now that the referendums failed, there is no chance anything gets done for at least 3-4 years. And relying on private business to come in obvsiouly isn’t working. I am generally a republican but even I can understand the value of having community amenenties like they do in woodbury and even in smaller cities like inver grove and west st. paul. CG needs to figure out what direction they want their city to go soon or else its going to lag in development and new housing (which brings in property tax $$). The houses in Woodbuy are being built like its 2004 again. With CG only being a couple miles away it needs to figure out a plan soon before its left behind.

I, on the other hand, am really glad I don’t live in Woodbury. I can park my boat in the driveway if I want, I can landscape my yard without neighborhood approval, I can drive down 80th street without 17 stoplights. We poor people in CG can always drive to Woodbury, go through customs and inspection, and hopefully get approved to use such fine amenities in Woodbury like the Red Roof Inn. Communities consist of individuals/families that make the area a great place to live. Its not all about having a community center or pool. I’ll stick with the nice parks, trails, ice rinks, and other things that make me happy in poor old CG!

Amen. There are plenty of things for kids to do in Cottage Grove. Our park system is fantastic. It’s funny to me that so many people complain about lack of parks and amenities in Cottage grove, yet when I use the parks in town I typically don’t see very many people doing the same. It sounds to me like a lot of people want new, new, new but have forgotten about the great parks and facilities that we already have. I love Cottage Grove, it’s a great place to live, and I definitely don’t want it to be another Woodbury.

I think that sign has been up more than a year, or at least seems like it. And the first day I saw it I commented that it wouldn’t happen. We do need a community center for the kids, parks are great, we have an ice arena but open skate time is limited. Had the referendum been for something like Hastings, not the same thing we just closed due to lack of funding,

We do need a community center for the kids, parks are great, we have an ice arena but open skate time is limited. Also have open swim at a couple of the schools, although open swim time is limited there as well. Had the referendum been for something like Hastings and not the same thing we just closed due to lack of funding or something similar to what Inver Grove has with the indoor water park and community center, I think it may have passed, or at least not failed so badly.

Why should a business want to come to CG? We collectively don’t spend our money in town. We have a small-town attitude and despite the best efforts of our leaders, it’s hard to bring in companies without showing them a fist full of money first.
The developers know that building in CG will cost them money. Until that changes they won’t come to our town. Developers are not in the business of doing charity work.
