How effective acupuncture is “depends on what we are asking it to do,” said Dr. Brent Bauer, director of the Department of Internal Medicine’s Complementary and Integrative Medicine program at Mayo Clinic, in an email to the the Herald. Continue Reading

This article is so full of pseudo scientific nonsense that I don’t know where to start in response. Maybe this quote can suffice:
“Bauer also cited “some very interesting work at the University of Michigan… looking at different responses to opioid receptors in the brain in response to real versus sham acupuncture which further makes me believe there is ‘something there.’” ”
First, objective scientists don’t talk about what they “believe” — in contrast, they talk about the strength of the evidence.
Second, it’s well known that there is an opiate response to pretty much any significant physical stimulus. I’ll wager that I could produce a bigger endorphin response by pinching a person’s butt hard than any acupuncturist could with their needles.
I doubt there will be much demand for a butt-pinching “balance and harmony” clinic though!
If anybody is interested in real investigation of these topics, then a guy who is arguably the world’s authority on research in the area has started a blog at: http://edzardernst.com/
