BRAD DOKKEN: ‘Dad, I shot a bear!’
November 17, 2012 at 6:05 pm in Grand Forks Herald
Morgan Knable stumbled on more excitement than he bargained for Nov. 11, the last day of deer season in the area he hunts southwest of Bagley, Minn. A 350-pound black bear rousted from its den tends to have that effect. Continue Reading

If you are deer hunting and can’t tell the difference between a deer and a bear, then maybe you are not mature enough to own a gun! That poor bear did nothing to deserve to be shot and killed! If you want to learn about the true nature of bears, go to bear.org! Society and media has always portrayed bears to be feared by humans, when in fact bears would prefer to co-exist in nature and fear humans with guns! This bear was probably due to give birth to cubs in January!

As someone who obviously wasn’t there, how do you know the specifics of the situation? Maybe the bear came at him suddenly. I don’t know since I wasn’t there either but your clearly judging a book by its cover.
Hunting has been apart of life since the beginning of time, get over it PETA.

Here are a few comments from my facebook page about this article:
-A catalogue of ignorance – “more like a nest than a den” – so they haven’t heard that bears can den in the open? I thought they were supposed to ‘know and love’ the animals they hunt?
And it’s another nauseating example of the DNR bending the rules. A *denned* bear killed a month after bear hunting season ended, and the perpetrator gets off scot-free – outrageous!
-This type of ignorance can not be ‘educated’…’nuf said.
-Poaching is poaching in my book the kid panicked and used a weapon unlawful, shooting a bear in a den is gutless, and the person should have been sited as so , and hunting rights taken away till the age of 21. The warden should also be fired.
-That is not an ethical hunter or parent…..hunting rights should be taken away from both !!
the warden should be fired for letting a person take game out of season, so does this mean i can go out an hunt out of season and use this story to pooch , I’m thinking not!!!
-This story needs to get to the public eye and swamp Mr. landwells office for dis plain action to the warden , maybe a judge would sentence this youth and father to a bear keepers class to learn the truth about black bears!
-In reading this youth knew what he was shooting at ,all to well. If he would have kept walking the bear would have went back to sleep , another reason for the hope educational center to get up and running, and try to work with the DNR to have this education program avabile to youths and people of all ages.
-Shouldn’t have ignored the law and let them take the bear.
-That family should be ashamed to have taught their son to behave like that… As for the precious bear. Hope has her now…shes safe and warm.
-Take away both their licenses!!!
-Why is it I don’t believe he just accidentally stumbled on a bear? Let’s see, Dad’s been telling the story about stumbling on a bear for 32 years and now the kid just happened to find himself in the same situation. Hmmm?
-$$%%##@@!! Just because you see something..is no reason to kill it. God, some people suck!
