Activity center plan is an intriguing idea

The idea of a multi-million-dollar activity center in Jamestown is an interesting one.
The proposed price tag for Two Rivers Activity Center is $30 million. That seems steep, but it’s an initial figure that includes facilities for a number of different groups and could very well shrink if organizers remove potential features. Continue Reading

I’m all for the TRAC if it can be built with private money and not be a burden to taxpayers.
I have a feeling that this will get built whether the citizens of Jamestown want it or not.

Granted, Jamestown isn’t in the Oil Patch, which has arguably played in a factor in WRCC admissions in the past year or two.

How was the WRCC performing before the oil boom? That’s the question that needs to be answered. There’s a BIG difference between Dickinson and Jamestown.

TRAC Committee members have said in public meetings that once the 1-cent sales tax paying for Jamestown High School expires in 2017, a similar tax could be used for building an activity center.
————————————
There’s no way the politicians will let the 1-cent sales tax expire. If they don’t use it for the TRAC, they’ll find another pet project for it. I wouldn’t be surprised if they tried to increase it to 1.5 or 2 cents.

Williston currently has a new 70 million 248,000 sq ft. rec center under construction that the residents had voted for using a 1 percent sales tax. Half of the revenue will pay for the rec center and the other half goes to their parks and rec dept. This tax expires when the rec center is paid off. This vote has nothing to do with “oil money”. I think Jamestown should consider this if they want a nice rec center as well.

The “leaders” in Jamestown need to learn the difference between a need and a want. There are severe infrastructure issues that need to be addressed immediately and they are concerned about a multi-million dollar recreation facility that will only benefit a small percentage of the population.
It’s like buying an Escalade when all you really need, and can afford, is a Ford Escape. But then again, Jamestown is a very keeping up with the Joneses type of place.

This rec center is a great idea for Jamestown, we have little kids that we end up driving to valleycity for the outdoor pool there, apparently Edgely has a really nice pool as well. Its about time Jamestown has youth in mind in terms of entertainment, we dont want to drive to Fargo or Bismarck just to find fun activities to do with the kid.
