Public subsidies for cell phone broadband expansion to stream movies, TV, radio, all day stock price streaming and games is not appropriate. Let those folks desiring such services pay for them. However, other more common sense uses of cell service broadband do seem appropriate for support. Things like 911 services, navigation, reasonable internet access, normal telephone service and other such services do make sense. Broadband service costs money, and even local government bodies cannot afford to set up fiber or wireless access networks for free. Lake County’s new broadband initiative may eventually cost its citizens as much as $100 million over its 20 year project plan, and Lake County is not providing this service free. As it is, it could end up costing Lake County citizens huge amounts of money with little benefit in return. Why all this ruckus? Mostly because a few folks and businesses don’t want to pay their fair share for services it costs money to deliver reliably. and people want their entertainment delivered free. One hopes all these subsidized projects actually will bear fruit, but few, if any, have been able to do so yet. I certainly hope reason and common sense prevail, but one has doubts.

I don’t want to seem like I’m attacking this kid, but everyone who lives in a rural area has had this idea, but as Brian Anderson pointed out it costs a lot of money to implement, and most rural areas are extremely strapped for funds. This is a nice idea, but not a feasible one, or even practical, at least not yet.

I want to build sand buggies so will you please bring in lots of sand? Great idea from a very responsible and energetic individual. How about those who get to use the broadband pay for it. BTW, everybody had availability to broadband via satalite – but not free like they want it!!!!!!!!!!!!
