One year, when driving between north Blackduck and International Falls, we came to an area on our left where I said to my wife would be a great place to see hawks. Almost immediately we saw a couple on the telephone wires. Then I saw something out of the corner of my eye to my right. It was a golden eagle, just coasting and keeping up with our 45 mph automobile. Once in a while he would flip those huge wings to maintain his forward progress. He stayed there for almost a mile, then decided to leave us. He banked right and the sunlight glistened burnished gold off his back. Beautiful. An immediate affirmation of Native Americans reverence for the bird.
