National view: GOP must drop its myths about Obama supporters
November 10, 2012 at 6:00 pm in Duluth News Tribune
Tuesday night on Fox News, host Bill O’Reilly said this: “Obama wins because it’s not a traditional America anymore. The white establishment is the minority. People want things.”

The author of this op-ed makes a good argument. However, as long as the Republican party is ostensibly run by a gravitationally challenged radio clown and his clones, they are not going to heed the author’s message. The “makers and takers” myth is actually offensive. It is true that Democrats advocate for a stronger social safety net than the Republicans, but Democrats believe in hard work and I believe they are more likely to have to take a shower after work than your average Republican.
The first thing the Republicans should realize is that “Atlas Shrugged” is a poorly written ridiculous fantasy novel that appeals mainly to adolescent boys. It shouldn’t be taken seriously and it sure as hell shouldn’t be the basis for political party’s philosophy.
I am betting that the Republicans won’t get it because they are still pretty strong in the retro states (the South) and they still have the majority in the House of Representatives, but they are doomed by the changing demographics of the country. And, I believe that are also doomed because they are so out of touch (and on the wrong side of history) on the social issues.

Being labeled a “taker” isn’t offensive if its true. 99 weeks of unemployment is a joke. You can find a job – maybe not your first choice – but there are jobs. But there are so many programs now to make poverty comfortable and without any stigma that many more are settling for this. The takers don’t vote for the Republicans, so he is wrong in the article.

define what a taker and a maker is….by ayn rands definition im sure you are a taker as well…since only 1% of us are apparently making things (with money…as i guess making them with your hands for the person who has the money isnt making things..its taking ? lol) And there would be a lot less people getting government benefits if so called “makers” and “job creators” actually created jobs and if the “makers” provided wages/benefits commensurate with their workers’ increased productivity. You and your atlas shrugged fantasy how about this…..your heroes in that book went on strike and are technically a union of people banding together to further their interests!!! Doesnt really fit with conservatives motto of self reliance and the power of the individual does it? If they are so great and make so many things why do they need to band together with other rich people to make some new nation, why cant they just live on their own with no help from anyone?? BTW id love to see this atlas shrugged nation of makers come to fruition …proponents think it will be nirvana but i got a question for you who is going to be the garbageman there, bill gates? lol
